For those who braved the really awful weather of the Saturday, Sunday afternoon was well worth the wait!
I have also attached two images of “558”, with just about the only blue sky we saw on the Saturday! I here talk of her going to the States, let us hope not!

I never met Pete Brothers, I had the opportunity several times, at a Duxford book signing, but Genuinely was in awe of the man (and all of the other veterans), and couldn’t think of anything to say, (the couple of minutes that you get to “chat”) do I wish I’d said hello, well yes, but I still don’t know what else I could have said.
Apart from his achievements nearly seventy years ago, he has given me inspiration, that you don’t have to grow old gracefully, but you can keep that fighting spirit for ever, God bless.
I am in total agreement Stuart! In most cases I never quite knew what to say when meeting one of these illustrious gentlemen.
The world is poorer for Peter Brothers parting, may he rest in peace and may I extend my sympathies to his family!

Sadly another one of the Hollywood Greats has passed on with hardly a comment in the media.
A proper moviestar!

I concur with all the aforementioned remarks; I purchased my first edition back in 1975 when it was first published, the retail price at that time was £1-50. These day’s first editions in good condition complete with dust jacket, have gone for prices in the region of £18-00.
Changed times!

“From this day, till the ending of the world, we in it shall be remembered. We lucky few, we band of brothers.
For he who today, sheds his blood with me, shall be my brother”.
Not really from a film as such but from “Band of Brothers”.
Nice speech, but then that little known writer of plays William Shakespeare penned the original version for “Henry The 5th” over 300 years ago!

Oops someone beat me to it, but don’t let that put you off looking up the original text; it really is a great speech.

I have just spent a really enjoyable few minutes looking through this thread; you have brought back a lot of memories from a long gone youth, thanks guys!

Sadly the problem with many conspiracy theorists is that no matter the evidence available to disprove their pet theory, they will remain firm in their belief!
The major beneficiaries of the more popular theories would appear to be the quasi historians who on occasions are paid to write pages of the most unmitigated rubbish, a few have even got the opportunity to turn their scribbling into well made television documentaries.
We seem to have developed a thirst for such things!
In the case of the incident mentioned the most lightly cause was I suspect a mechanical failure, if irrefutable proof of some other cause comes to light. Then history will have become a tad more enlightened!

Afternoon James,
James I would not even dream of contradicting, you are undoubtedly right in saying that the build-up of fighter command for the Battle of Britain was a close run thing!
It really is quite amazing to look to look at the number of modifications carried out on the run-up to the battle. Like you I tend to accept some quoted dates with reservations!
Cheers
Eric
And retrospectively, so remaining fabric-winged Hurricanes had them replaced with metal skinned wings in service ASAP.
True James, but certainly many of the Mk I’s that went to France in 1939 had the fabric covered wings and two bladed wooden props. By all accounts the construction of the metal covered wing was substantially different to the earlier fabric covered item.

Eric
One can only wish him well!

The fabric covered wings of the early Hurricane Mk I’s was a limiting factor in the performance of the aircraft (The first 500 production aircraft were fitted with fabric covered wings). The Metal covered wing was first fitted to ‘L2027′(April 1939), this wing design was fitted from 481st Hurricane Mk I on!
Finland received 12 Mk I airframes during 1940, shortly after it had been attacked by Russia.

I could never quite understand why Macrihanish was closed; it always struck me as being the ideal location for a tri-service training base!
