19 Sqn became the first operational Spitfire Sqn, I would think Duxford might push this one!

Paul,
The cryptic titles are all part of the fun, at best they will pull us into areas of aviation we have had no interest in before! Be it name that under-carriage leg or name that long forgotten aviation flick (movie for our younger readers), keep on writing!

Thought provoking!
A Happy Christmas to all our servicemen, wherever they may be serving and may they come home safely to their loved ones!
Merry Christmas

Glad to see everyone using the Airports proper name, perhaps it is a sign of my age, but I dislike re-naming long standing airports after pop stars, footballers and the like!
WF
Include me in please! I have been following progress on the rebuild for some time, absolutely fascinating. How about a talk on the engine rebuild, following by something on the airframe and finish off with a talk on operating the machine.

I attended the Flying Legends Airshow 2007 at Duxford this year and
like many others pre ordered at a special rate of ยฃ10.00 the DVD to
be sent to me once it had been produced following the weekend. –
It is now November and have not received it – I have been in touch
with Duxford IWM and Duke Videos direct without any real results.Very curious to know what has happen to the hundreds of
folks who along with me reported to a Marquee behind the control Tower at Duxford during the weekend, handed over ยฃ10.00 and filled in address
forms following hearing an announcment by the Commentators on on the
weekend of the show . Can any one help ??
Richard,
Like you I ordered this DVD at Legends, I am glad to say that the item arrived in todays post!

What ever happened to the Queens Flight Wessex helicopters after demob?
Your time and trouble appreciated.
Be lucky

One was at Hendon, the last time I saw it.

Ah but, had the Spitfire & possibly the Hurricane been fitted with the Griffon in 1940 the Battle of France may have been desisive for the allies & the losses to the Luftwaffe so great that the Battle of Britain might not have happened!!!
We can play what if games from now until doomsday, the game does not prove anything. what if we had ‘B2’ bombers in 1939, see what I mean?
Eric
As always the figures quoted for engine life vary a bit, but 8 hours seems about right. As James rightly says the allies were working hard to deny Germany the materials required to withstand the temperatures generated in Jet engines.

Problem is these days is that the “Great British Public” don’t give a frig about the armed forces these days — allowing the government to do what they want with them. Iraq hasn’t helped (perhaps that should be “negative media reporting on Iraq”). You hear it constantly on radio phone ins about soldier’s pay or lack of equipment other than from those who have some kind of attachment. It’s all “well they signed on the dotted line, they knew what they were getting into, they don’t have to join up.” Most people I have ever known without any connection to the military, look down on them. Pretty sad state of affairs really.
Could not agree more Mick, as one whose nephew disappears off to hotter climates from time to time it annoys me to see the outdated equipment they are issued with!
Mind you looking back to the start of World War II, the British armed forces were not that much better off.
They are still damned good at what they do!

Richard has many things, however sadly he does not have 330 wing struts, sorry Nev I have already explored that possibility!

Hi All
I am probably going to say something really stupid, however here goes. If we restore the remains of a FW 190 or any other wartime aircraft, that was manufactured only in wartime by the then German aviation industry. Do we not come up against the same problems of certification that appear to be afflicting Tom Blairโs โ190โ replica? Wartime certifications, even if you can find all the paperwork, surely would not be sufficient given possible wartime compromises.
The point I am trying to make, is that getting the real thing into the air, will be as difficult in paperwork terms, as will be certification of a replica. Both are in effect new aircraft!

Turbiniaโs view of Britainโs position in world affairs and the way we should react or should I say not react to our neighbours on the other side of the world is a very seductive argument. Sadly I seem to remember hearing recordings of a gentleman by the name of Neville Chamberlain making similar comments about a far off country called Czechoslovakia:
โHow horrible, fantastic, incredible it is that we should be digging trenches and trying on gas-masks here because of a quarrel in a far-away country between people of whom we know nothing!โ
I agree that we are not the world power we once were, however taking a position that what happens outside our bailiwick is no concern of ours just does not wash!
