Well, it was fun watching people pretend that Iraq was going to remain a unified state and establish a modern air force. The US is currently in the process of evacuating Balad AB, and that pretty much spells the end of any training or support for the nascent IQAF. I’m not sure how the funding works on the F-16IQ deal, but if they were already paid for then the USAF is going to receive its first new F-16s in over a decade. Otherwise they will just not be built.
well the US withdrew its training mission in Balad today.
The planes have been pre-paid for by Iraq (all 36)… I wonder if the future “sumer & akkad” state (which paid for them) will receive them… or not? who knows… and what flag will they stick on them if they do? questions questions…
This apparently one of the helicopters type Bell 407 were seized by insurgents in Ninevah?
that is a photoshop? or a pic from Anbar Operations?
Hi Sheytanelkebir
Do you have any information on what helicopters were seized by ISIS/al Qaeda in Ninevah province as stated by the speaker of parliament?
(I still remember singing the old song in a school play Jonah: “Ninevah City was a city of sin…” ;-))
no helicopters were seized according to MOD website.
the situation now in Iraq.
basically its at the point of “separating” into three states:
-Kurdistan
-ISIS
-Sumer & Akkad (a.k.a southern Iraq)
in terms of assets what is available now (to the de-facto shia state of “sumer and akkad”):
8-14 Mi35M helos (including 6 delivered yesterday)
27 EC-635s
30 IA-407s
50 Mi171s
3x AC-208 combat caravans
10x King Air 350i ISR planes
what they “need” desperately:
dozens of armed drones to hit the fast moving and unpredictable Daesh terrorist convoys and keeping ISAR radar coverage over a large chunk of Iraq to forewarn of these attack.
Some hardened attack aircraft (A10, SU25s) but in sufficient numbers to tackle the 20+ “contact zones” with the terrorists!
Contact zones in central Iraq between ISIS and “sumer & akkad”
contact zones in the north between ISIS and Kurdistan.
So both “zones” need air support in order to contain first, and eventually “neutralise” the ISIS/Daesh threat.
Given that Iraqis would be pressing everything they have into action. How can they best use their 20 odd Super Mushak trainers (when delivered)? I think Sweden had their planes armed with gun pods and missiles, not sure of the current situation.
they don’t have a single one of them right now.
What year was the UH-60 and AB-412 offered? I don’t remember hearing about those.

and

also you had many things like the troposcatter radios
http://www.dsca.mil/major-arms-sales/iraq-mobile-troposcatter-radio-systems
that they ended up buying somewhere else,
and 36 AT6B texans… that they ended up cancelling

and many many others…
Iraq will receive AiM-9M and AiM-7M with the aircraft initially.
The missiles in the LM show are obviously only for demo. The contracted missiles will be delivered by C-5s to Iraq later on.
Iraq did however buy JHMCS with their planes, so maybe one day they will receive AiM-9X / AiM-120Cs…
they will be used as light attack aircraft.
coincidentally, there was a news report in Iraq recently which stated that Iraq leased 2x SU-25s from Russia for urgent use in the battles in Anbar. It seems they’re truly building up a hodge podge of whatever airframes they can scrape together if that news turns out to be true….
so they’ll have the following light attack aircraft:
-12 L159s
-24x FA-50s
-36x F16-IQ
-2x SU-25s (unconfirmed)
-24x AT-6C (this is a maybe)
but still no capable interceptor… yawn. The Iraqi MOD seem to be operating in their own universe where they acquire assets once the SHTF and not actually plan ahead at all… maybe they need a nice little Iranian / Saudi air incursions to wake them up a bit.
there was only “talk”… you know, Iraqis also “discussed” buying stuff like Lightnings in the 1960s, Mirage IIIs, Lynx helos and many other things.
your best bet is to try iraqimilitary.org forum.
The only thing I know is that the Iraqis chose the “non nuclear” variant of the Mirage-2000N + “conventional ASMP” instead in the end. Of course the 1991 gulf war meant it was never delivered.
another rare one from Iraq. A sikorsky S51!

I’m sure a VP at dassault would “know” if it was true though.
Asked to Dassault, absolute BS.
wow really?
That is a big shock. I wonder why the IqAF commander said those words then? Morale boosting for new officers? well, that’s a sad and quick ending for this story.
Commander of the Iraqi Air Force just announced that France has offered to sell Iraq a squadron of Rafales!!
In the past the French had flat out refused selling Rafale to the Iraqis. Lets see what will happen with this!
Interesting development!!!!
In a graduation ceremony for officers the commander of the air force said the following:
France has agreed to offer us a Squadron of Rafale Fighter jets and some NH90 helicopters this April during the “anti terrorism conference in Iraq!!!!
He said “these aircraft will offer us a very advanced air defence and attack capability including sea”.
