if what you guys are saying is true.
i.e. no updated engine and no updated radar…
then the deal will simply not be funded by the Iraqi Finance Ministry and its dead in the water just like many “rip off” deals before…
L159BQ from Czech
BTR4 from Ukraine (they rejected these at port in Umm Qasr this year and cancelled the entire deal due to defects and delays!)
Mirage F1 MF2000 from france
Mi17 and W3 sokol helos from Poland
“defence solutions” upgraded T72 deal
The Iraqi Prime Minister and Minister of defence can sign as many “rip off deals” as they want (see above), but ultimately they won’t get funded since OTHER Iraqis are now very careful about being “ripped off” in arms deals especially and they are looking at weapons deals like hawks in the Iraqi parliament and media and finance ministry.
I would hope that KAI would be aware of the previous arms cancellations by Iraq and not try the same “tricks” with “ripping off the stupid arabs”… but we shall wait and see the details… if indeed they come with APG67 radar and F404 engine for $45M per airframe (a downgrade compared to the $30M FA50 for Korea / Philippines)… then the deal will simply “stall” for a few months and then die quietly, or get “repriced” or the koreans will add another 10 airframes in the deal (similar to the corruption attempts in last years’ Russian deal that was renegotiated with the price difference in weapons compensated for with additional weapons).
Despite the US selling often downgraded weapons to the Iraqis, at least they don’t try and rip us off… right now the FMS is the only “trusted” weapons supply mechanism in Iraq.
If.. and big IF the Iraqi standard T50IQ comes with a decent AESA radar and the F414 engine and 9 hardpoints / strengthened wing… it would be a pretty nice “competitor” for the Gripen’s market. But at $45M flyaway cost the T50IQ is hardly a “bargain”… I am guessing the Swedes would be reluctant to sell to unsavoury countries like Iraq… which is the Koreans ultimate Unique Selling Point! I’d expect the likes of Congo, Angola, Libya, Ethiopia, Argentina, Chile, Azerbaijan, Georgia? and others to be interested in such an aircraft.
JF17 / FA50 are the poor man’s “fighter” of the 2020s. The Swedes put themselves out of the market due to the fluffy human righty nonsense. guns don’t kill people, rappers do.
Crews for the Night Hunter helicopter have finished their training.
Iraqis are expecting first deliveries next month.
I wonder however if they will arrive in time for the army day parade… I somehow doubt it (6th january).
What about RACR or SABR?
The Americans wouldn’t sell it for Iraq’s F16s… would they sell it for our Korean planes?
$45 million per unit implies low 30’s per unit and the cost to set up the logistics chain.
No.
The “chain” and all support and training and parts etc.. are covered by a SEPARATE $1Bn contract.
The $45M is JUST for airframe.
Which is why the Selex Vixen 500E AESA radar hasn’t been fitted to it. The Americans said no.
I believe that was true of the T50. But the FA50 version as I can glean from official sources gives the freedom for the Koreans to “fit” what they want…
The way I see it is that it includes a 20 year support package. But Mi-35 acquired recently were way expensive…
it does not. The $1.1Bn is “flyaway cost” only. the 20 year support package is another $1Bn.
potential radar choices:
Elta EL2032 – no
SABR/RACR – US AESA radars. Unlikely IMHO US wouldn’t sell this for the Iraqi F16s.
SamsungThales AESA radar – maybe
LigNex1 AESA radar – Maybe
Selex VIXEN-500E AESA radar – Maybe
potential engine choices:
F404 – if this is kept, then the Iraqis got well and truly mugged
F414 – Best bet IMHO
EJ200 – outside chance
another question is whether they keep the existing wings / hardpoints or have the strengthened wings with 9 total hardpoints.
a “standard” FA-50 costs $30M with F404 engine and Elta 2032 radar.
An additional $15M per unit (50% price hike!) would indicate that not only is the 2032 radar replaced (for obvious reason this is guaranteed), but the engine is replaced too.
what do you think?
does anyone know what is the actual spec of the T50IQ? maybe from a Korean source?
For a designation of ‘IQ’ its pretty dumb to have unique names for each country even if they are all slightly different as the names become meaningless.
I believe the T50IQ is a FA-50 with different radar and engine. quite different to a “standard” T50 or even FA-50.

following on. today the contract was signed for 24 T50IQ training and light attack aircraft for $1.1Bn.
we don’t know the details of the contract… but at the price of $44M a pop, they’d better include F414 engines and SamsungThales AESA radar…

according to yonhap. the T50IQ for Iraq is a specialised version of the FA/50.

first one to get a DEW wins!
a mini thorium reactor built into the airframe!
will they have PEW PEW sound effects?
