High time they got some decent stuff for the navy. The PN is really outclassed. As they say a strong enemy makes a nation stronger and in this case hopefully a stronger PN will push the Indians to really go in for a massive upgrade of the IN(a course on which they have already embarked upon. But a push really helps specially in the submarine arm).

“India, the region’s largest naval power (and the only country apart from the US and UK to operate aircraft carriers).”

Um, What happened to the French, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian, Thai, carriers? Even Russia has a carrier that they take out once every 5 years or so.

Probably ment that the only country besides the US and UK(due to diego gracia) capable of basing aircraft carriers in that region. The French dont have a base there. The Italians , spanish and brazilians are not going to send their aircraft carriers there and last heard about the Thai carrier it was going no where anytime soon and they were thinking of getting rid of it.

Hey Harry thanks for renaming it. The thought had struck me that the thread should have been named as such.

    Indian Navy Speculation Thread

A long time ago there was an article that the Russian’s were focusing their attention on selling aircraft for the Five carriers that the IN planned to build or purchase. Anyone have any idea how many carriers the IN has planned for in the future. There is a lot of talk about the IN working towards a three carrier navy. Two out at sea and one in refit at all times.
Also what would an IN carrier group consist of .How many ships and subs and of what type.
    Have a go guys.

Those who think it’s a game will play it like a game. Those who don’t will simply donate money, supplies and rescue personel.

Havent heard much of those supplies and rescue personel from the Chinese side.

Whats with China? Thought they would like to get into the game(sad to say it has become a game for the major powers) with its navy and armed forces.

Anyone want to speculate what the Indian P17A frigate will be like? Seems design work on it has already started.

Thanks for the link Jonesy. By the way does anyone know how much the airdefence ship will displace and how many aircraft it will carry. There have been reports ranging from 32000 tons to over 40000 metric tones. Anyone have a clear idea?

Any one have any more on the IAF base in the Nicobars? Initial new reports said that the base had been washed away. Any one have any idea what kind of aircraft were positioned there.
I am in my home town and I live by a river which flows out into the sea not far away. I saw a real live mini tasunami yesterday flodding the river and over flowing the backs.

Is the Typhoon as sturdy as the Russian fighters? Hope its not one of those fancy toys that goes into a spin just cause some electronics are knocked of.

India sets out fighter jet plans

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4020275.stm

Russia’s MiG-29 could be one of the targeted fighters
India has begun the process of buying 125 new fighter aircraft, a senior air force official has said.
Vice Chief of Air Staff SK Malik said in the southern Indian city of Bangalore on Wednesday that all options were open.

“We will go global. Perhaps F-16s will be there. Swedish Grippen, Mirage 2000 and MiG-29 will be there,” he said.

The air force modernisation plan will replace its fleet of ageing and often unreliable Russian MiG-21s.

    Two-year schedule

Air Marshal Malik was speaking at the annual conference of the Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine.

“We have not short-listed any aircraft nor discounted any,” he said.

Air Marshal Malik said the initial process of identifying the required aircraft would take about two years.

To be fair to ISRO they have built up pretty impressive capabilities on a shoe string budget and in a resonable time frame inspite of all the initial hiccups. Nothing to suggest that they wont able to do the above in the time period specified.
