Wish they would sign up a partner quickly. Kaveri for the LCA is just one thing. Its the begining of an industry in India. Once its done and fitted on the LCA you will see better versions or newer engines for other aircraft. The MCA will be powered with a thrust vectoring one.

Wouldnt want to make the mistake the US made in Vietnam would you. They put no guns on their new aircraft and depended on missiles. What happened? The Vietnamese or the Russians as the Americians like to say started shooting them out of the sky in wvr with cannons.

Hongdu K-8: the best selling Chinese aircraft currently with 120 sold to Egypt as the K-8E. Sri Lanka, Burma, Zimbabwe and Namibia among other customers. An advance version with glass cockpit was supposedly flight-tested late last year.

Jokes apart. I seriously thought that the K-8 was developed by Pakistan the way they trumpeted their sale to Egypt. Never paid it much attention and never bothered to find out. I must have been out of my mind to thing that 😛 . Just goes to show what marketing and perceptions can do. 😀

If MIG gets the additional order for the Indian navy and even a part order for the Indian MMRCA the dark days for MIG will be nearing an end. And if the Russians decide to select the MIG proposal to codevelop with India as the 5th Gen fighter then MIG will be well and truly back.

As someone said any purchase of Americian aircraft will depend on the Civilian Nuclear deal. Its not only India who has to prove to be a worthy ally of the US by voting with it on the Iran issue, the US also has to offer something substantial in return. There is already deep rooted apprehension in the Indians about sanctions where the US is concerned. If the Civilian Nuke deal dosent go through it will be bye bye to Americian aircraft. But if it goes through its a safe bet that the F-18’s will be bought as the Americians will demand their pound of flesh.

Guess the F-16 option is out cause of their flying with the PAF. Just shows how things can turn around. When the BJP went to the polls during the last general elections the Mirage deal was about to be signed. George Fernandes the then defence minister had said after tying up the Gorshkov deal that the Mirage deal would be signed by the next govt. Guess he expected the next govt to be a BJP one. No one expected the congress to be in power. With the loss of the BJP in the elections and the decision of the new govt not to get into a single vendor situation the chances of the Mirage went out of the window inspite of the IAF tailoring the initial parameters for the MMRCA to mirror the Mirage2000-5.

Guess the Mirage was outdated anyway inspite of the promised rafale technology. Most of the other aircraft will be around for the next 25-30 years in production and development viz the gripen,f-18,typoon,rafale .Cant say much about the Mig-35.

Interview With Vice Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Ajit Bhavnani
    FORCE Feb 2006

‘The RFP for M-MRCA will go to Gripen, Mirage-2000, Rafale, F-16, F-18, MiG-35 and Eurofighter’
    ———————————————————————–

What are the IAF’s acquisition priorities?

The acquisition priorities in the critical areas of aircraft, weapon systems and other operational related support infrastructure are based on the need to ensure that the operational capability of the IAF continues to grow with technological improvements and is sustained with contemporary emerging technologies.

When will the global Request for Proposal (RFP) for Multi Role Combat Aircraft be given out? Has the requirement of 126 aircraft gone up? The RFP will be issued for which all aircraft?

The RFP for the MMRCA is expected to be issued shortly. The requirement of number of aircraft has not changed. It is proposed to issue the RFP for the Gripen, Mirage-2000, Rafale, F-16, F-18, MiG-35 and Eurofighter.

The IN has 27 under construction and 32 to be ordered. Thats not a small number. Once they have their force levels taken care of the expansion will start. The Indian government has at long last realised the importance and strategic value of a strong navy. The IN is no more the poor cousin of the armed forces and they have the best record of the three where indigenous systems are concerned.

    “Naval fleet to be bolstered
Kochi: As many as 27 ships including an aircraft carrier will be ready in the next five years and orders will be placed for another 32 ships to bolster the Indian Navy’s strength, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash said here today.

‘We have already placed orders for 27 ships including six submarines and one aircraft carrier in the Indian docks. They will be ready in four to five years,’ he told reporters.

‘The Government has cleared purchase of another 32 ships and we will place orders now. We will place orders to Indian manufacturers and only if it is so needed, we will depend on foreign countries. In the next 10 to 15 years, the fleet depletion will thus be fully made up,’ Admiral Arun Prakash said.”
