Ace in the Hole be damned. That colour scheme is just plain Butt Ugly.
To mark the 90th anniversary of the squadron, one F-16 (serial number 84-1393) was painted to represent the history of the 111th Squadron. All colors and markings have specific meanings, reflecting the ninety years of history of the unit.
The rudder is painted like in the 1920s. The markings on the wings and flaps recall the period of the Second World War. Blue fuselage represents the Korean War. Gray below represents the jet age. The code ” N5 A” painted on the fuselage is the same as that worn by the P-51 Mustang squadron during the Second World War. The star on the fuselage is also of the Second World War, while the star on the wing represents the pre-war period. Legend “Ace in the Hole” and the star on the rudder reproduce marks of the squadron during the Korean War, when they flew the F- 84. It’s written “Est. 1917 ” on the ventral stabilizer for the date of creation of the unit on Ellinghton Field base.
