Not really a totally Belgian aircraft : the design was effectively asked to a well known Italian, Stelio FRATI. π
IF I’M NOT WRONG :the first prototype of Squalus was effectively built in Milan but, if commands were going further, production will later be procured in SONACA of Gosselies. The home company of Squalus was in Belgium (PROMAVIA chairman was AndrΓ© DELHAMENDE) and financed at 50% – reduced to 38 % later – by Belgium government (118 Billions of then FB) and other 50 by PROMAVIA company and privates. The Belgian government obtains also the possibility to export the engine (TFE-190-1).
As your own post suggest, the aircraft was appreciated, and tested, by many manufacturers and pilots (Israelian, Russian, English, Canadian and … American ones have piloted it). Not so bad for a little country.

I remember that airplane!
It was a great opportunity (lost) for Belgium to recover it’s aviation manufacturer history.
The aircraft study was passed to Canada with some modifications (Phoenix Fanjet Sigmajet with 2 seats and Phoenix Fanjet Magnajet with 4 seats), but with same result till now. π

I hope they don’t retire the B-1B’s! As we could live without the A-10’s and even F-15C’s. Yet, the Bomber Fleet is getting dangerously low….:(
I agree. Even if B-2 lines style are really impressives for stealth purpose, I can’t convince myself that the smooth feminine curves of a B-1 are “old fashioned”.
B-2 is no more than a flying wing with triangles accomodations. B-1 is a succession of bumps, curves and moving sections. :dev2:
