I met Bill who was one of cousteau’s pilots for years, a friend employed him for his TV program, flying something different : Dean Wilson “EXPLORER” , so twin engine , a all yellow amphibious, the aircraft did a round the world flight for the program. At that time i told my friend that a Goose would be also superb on the screen but he wanted something different because on the other french channel another guy was using a PBY…
If anybody knows alaska here, we had a female pilot at that time LORIE EGGE, she was from alaska and ran a company for fish spotting and charter flights for hunters etc…with a 185, the company was named “skytrekking” and i never found her again…

And for me that was working on AD4 Skyraiders in Chad in 1988 with didier chable, we’ve been staying there for weeks working in harsh conditions in order to get these birds back into order…the first pre-oil then startup happened at night, all the air force people stationned there were looking at that event…i have such wonderful videos about that adventure…

Keith , your post confirms my opinion that it would be good to get a clearer perspective on the yak family, we heard everything about the british and american superb production, getting into the smallest differences between types, but when it gets to yakovlev there is like a smoke screen…

It is not a Yak 11… it may have been once but it certainly isnt now…. American engine, retractable tailwheel, too many prop blades and single seat canopy. I believe it calls itself a Yak 3UA.

They named it YAK3U PW in reference to the true 1945 yak3U that carried the ASH82 engine (the original had a wider wing than the yak3 and a shorter fuselage while really being heavier)
That new production Yak3U has been produced in Romania by the Capel family and has a yak11 wing .

There are few in france in flying condition, a friend of mine had an aerobatic routine with her and it was really superb, so i know some people can do good flying with her …one is based in Melun just south east of paris for 15Nm…it is AMPAA base (AD4, TBM, Storch, T6, Po2, Tiger moth, IL10!!!, etc etc )

Somewhere I heard, that Tony is the only guy who has flown a Spit (´213) competion style aerobatics (called Aresti style aerobatics by my “informant”). And that he is the only guy to enter a Spit in an aerobatic competion, and doing quite well I was told. Is any truth in these rumours?

Just to make a foot note, there is a lot of a difference between competion aerobatics and the kind seen flown by old fighters at airshows.

Tony Bianchi is remembered in france for displaying the yak11 doing up to four vertical rolls …easy on a paper but once in the cockpit doesn’t look the same !
I met him back in 1996 when buying my chipmunk that was based at PPS for few months, Tony and his crew were really of great help and i really liked the “ambiance” at PPS. Ii also remember clearly a superb yak11 project in the hangar…Tony knew he had a superb project but my pockets were already empty! (that yak is under rebuild now)
Thanks for the pics of the spit…glad the chippie shared part of the hangar with that beauty !
