raising awareness
I have a very small amount of experience in marketing, but that little bit does tell me that an airworthy Walrus has many aspects which could allow it to fit into displays, open days, marine events etc.
Some have already been mentioned in a very amusing way.In particular the role as an airborne lifeboat appeals to many, especially when it was unable to get airborne after a rescue but was so tough that it just taxied to the nearest friendly ship.
Comfirmation of the new owners intentions would be welcomed.
pic of Skitten
By co incidence I was over the launch point for the gliders on the Operation Gunnerside last Wednesday…RAF Skitten Caithness, note the runway obstruction.Link to my site and Skitten pic..

flying limits
An aspect of the ex AEW Shacks which limits their potential as flying exhibits relates to spar life. Due to the requirements of national defence an extension was made available to the RAF by the design authority iE British Aerospace. After the end of RAF service this extension ceased. It is significant that the only AEW Shack flown in civil hands has been operating on the US register experimental category.
nostalgia
I have still got a full run of the first thirty or so AA mag cos I helped with contributions so will be keeping them however I am willing to let my Control Columns go just drop me your email and I can work out postage etc.
on line pics
So did that solve your problem Duxford hawk ?
show pics
Go to http://www.ukar.co.uk
you will find the most incredibly talented bunch of aircraft photographers. They post awesome images of airshows plus other photos taken around the world. A lot of the work is never seen in magazines due to lack of space not the standard.
Did I mention that it is a free site with a vountary contribution. There is no catch and you see the action often on the evening of the show thanks to digital cameras.
Austers
I have always liked Austers and thanks to a good friend I flew in his Mark 5D
GAOCR on several occasions before he sold it.
I researched the history of this aircraft and it turned out to have spent time with a Typhoon unit in Belgium indeed it was a tactical Auster ! of 2ATAF
bases include B67 Helmond.
Would be a co incidence if its the same as just mentioned by FTR PLt and if so I would really appreciate a photocopy of the relevant pages.
Serial NJ673 now flying in RAF camo , last known at Bagby.
Memorials in parts
I am an advocate of marking the lives of those who died in aircraft crashes by both marking the site when practical and recovering parts which can assist in rebuilds as well as being on display with the details of the crew and mission.Sadly on site memorials are not always respected.
On two occasions I have passed on parts for rebuilds IE the altimeter in the Mosquito at Elvington.
Do not feel upset about the parts from the crash, instead use the parts to mark the memory of those who lost the lives. And also consider that some crashes involved no loss of life.
recovery pic
I found these of the P40 in my collection of wreck pics
The Hercules at Wick is from a Beaufighter. The farmer has never bothered to return my calls and may by now have moved it. It should also by now be undercover as he did not realise that he should have got permission for the recovery from the crash site. The crash resulted in one of the crew getting a medal for bravery .
Sadly I only have limited time now when trying to get farmers interested in finding a proper place for recovered items and the Inverness H.A .M were given details so its up to them.
From then to now
Honestly I just despair sometimes. Just how many moaning nit picking people exist with an interest in aircraft? Do they really care to look back at what little was being done in the sixties compared to now in the UK?
Get some perspective and praise what has been achieved since then. Duxford has expanded far beyond what many dreamed of. Give credit to a relatively small number of pioneers who put in huge effort with little financial return.
It seems to be a national hobby to knock success , get positive , stop moaning and relish the sights and sounds at Duxford which in 1970 were just dreams.
Recovery yes but to where?
In all cases I now see recovery of visible artefacts as the best option. Scrap dealers the world over have ignored the rules and once word is out and the metal prices are good they will sneak in and process the remains, tanks, ships, aircraft, etc.
If a local place is available to display items properly then fine use that place, this has happened in some of the Pacific Islands.
Rare undersea/water wrecks also need recovery when their location puts them at risk. It does not take many anchors dragged thru a wreck site to cause chaos.
Rrecovery by well meaning people is also a problem if they have no plan for preservation afterwards. For example there is a really historic Hercules engine sitting at a farm near Wick and nothing has been done to display or preserve it.
With the increasing amount of reluctance to say yes to digs I can see a return to the cowboy days of the 70s.
Already I have a feeling that ex dig parts being sold on are being passed off as non crash salvage. Unless the part has an aircraft serial number on it (very unlikely) the provenance is impossible to determine.
Highland airways Rapides etc
My website has a lot of airviews of Scotland and the start of an aviation section. I have loads more aviation pics but not web ready, need a new scanner. http://www.scotaviaimages.co.uk
Thanks for the info on GAIDL , I only have Flying start to the Day book which is an excellent history of Fressons airline. Captain Fresson is the one with a very strong Inverness link, his Inverness Longman airfield is now an industrial estate although two of his relief landing grounds could still be used by Auster stol types.
I welcome contact via my website from any Highland aviation enthusiasts , we really should have our own society up here.
oops
Amending my last post, the Duxford Rapide ex Highland Airways is GAGJG.
