    A true showman and gentleman

My condolences to the family of Ray Hanna, like many who have posted here I never met him in person, however his displays and interviews convey the spirit of a wonderful person.

Those who have known him in person have written of his giving attitude. His memorial should be that we aspire to live our lives to the full seeking to share our enthusiasms in the pleasant manner which he did.

    Canberra at MAM

Great work repainting outside, however he does perhaps not realise that the top surfaces of the Canberra are visible to all the museum visitors who emerge from the covered area at the top of the steps. It makes a good wide angle photo,so his hard work will be noticed. Or have I got the wrong Canberra?

    GAOSU update

GAOSU is now sadly a wrecked airframe after a very heavy force landing almost a year ago near Elgin at the glider strip. The pilot survived and was badly injured but is now out of hospital. The wreck is stored at Kinloss ,I would guess that the pilot was wearing a helmet because the cockpit coaming has a huge dent in it.
I was also an air cadet and loved the chippie flights.

Shack N790WL in Texas the sad facts

I got an email from the CAF(or whatever you call it now) inTexas last year, they do not intend to operate the Shack and are fully aware of the fact that sadly the airframe has exceeded its life regarding the spar.
British Aerospace will not take any responsibilty for this airframe and the UK CAA were not willing to let it operate in the UK.
Only the interest of Uk defence operations enabled the Shacks to continue in RAF service past their design life.

This highlights a potential pitfall of buying some ex uk Mod airframes and expecting to fly them in the UK. Just because they were allowed to fly under the MOD rules does not mean they can fly under civil rules.(notwithstanding approved modifications)

    airline tv series

Many scenes filmed at Blackpool Squires Gate, second series was to have used the Constellation now at Wroughton.
Blackpool also featured in Family at War series using Reflectaire Lanc NX611 with some clever night engine runs.Would like to see that again.

    Blackpool Stanley park

The original terminal buildings for the 30s aerodrome were incorporated into the Zoo and are still visible plus other odd relics.Possibly an original small blister hangar may still be in use adjacent to the main road , it was a sports hall.

Last real aircraft on the site was a visit by Spitfire K9942 by road in about 1969 at the royal Lancashire
Agric show before the zoo was built.

Also was used by model flyers for ages until anew hotel was built.

    Flying a Vulcan

Many large projects to build or rebuild something attract support and also opposition.

The opposition can become very strident and on some occasions has actually helped to put off financial investment.

The Lottery support for the Vulcan has been fact driven,I would hope that negative speculation does not have an adverse effect on potential sponsors.

To get the project to its current stage has been a very understated achievement in my view. Those who read these pages are generally well informed on aviation heritage, the general public are as yet to understand the importance of our Vulcans in being part of a peace keeping force.

    Gib in a film

Recently saw the film about the RN diver Buster Crabbe. Lots of close up shots of Shacks on the rock and some flying,so if you get the chance have a look, its not all fish heads.

that review of the b of b dvd release

It is always a shame when a reviewer gets facts muddled with myth.

In this case he wrongly states that the film Heinkels were former Luftwaffe then used by the Spanish. As far as I am aware..from memory…they were actually CASA licence built with Merlins.

I do understand that he would not realise that an actual Stuka was positioned at Henlow for the film and not used, also not used were the converted Stuka look alikes from Proctors.

TSR 2 wind tunnel test model

As an Air cadet in Lancashire we often called on other local squadrons. The ATC sqn at Fleetwood had a lot of good radio stuff ,hovercraft but what really grabbed my attention was a solid metal tSR 2 model, it was about 3 foot long possibly brass? this would be circa 1970.
The model had a traceable provenance, a father of a cadet worked at Warton.

Big twin models Bof B film

I recall that at least two RC models were in use for the 1969 film, both of He111, you can see the radio aerial on one that is crashed into the sea.
They were fairly large,One was on display at the switch on of the Blackpool Illuminations around 69. seemed around a 14 foot span.

    633 film

The film is now out on DVD, I did some screen caps but there are hiding inside the pc somewhere. spare film left over was used in Mosquito squadron.

Ok a few points from the film found when freeze framing.
para drop from B25 , this was likely the camera platform any idea which B25?

air sequences Scotland, the base was Dalcross Inverness. The valley runs were at the Larig ghru just a short distance from Aviemore(appears in the edge of one shot)

I would like to know the coast location, I suspect the cliffs are SE Sutherland.
Where three Mosquitoes fly low up the inlet the first is so low it has prop wash !
