Reminds me of the final fate of the ex HAPS Sabre which was sold twice at auctions in the UK and despite being ex RAF never got back on display. It was scrapped.
Those who know what it is like to be based on a rural airbase away from towns might recall the poor standard of country lanes around the bases. if a developer was made to pay for road upgrades they would run away fast from many sites.Even small stretches of new road are expensive to build and unlike a house cannot be sold.
We had no choice about living on base or nearby quarters so it was pointless complaining. But that would not apply to potential new home owners and no doubt far more peopel would be expected to live at these locations than when they were active bases.
Seems that controversial aspects only surface when the media get wind of a potential scandal. These recoveries on mainland Europe battle sites have been going on ever since the end of the wars. The usual mix of collecters, dealers, scrappies at first and then later an attempt to formalise the process.Bringing in a digger is why official permission was sought and granted, otherwise it would be business as usual.
very interesting, especially the need for compressed air,in a similiar way the Harrier needed distilled water to hover.
Locate, survey, identify. Liase with landowners, assess historic value. Explain to landowner that parts left in the so called wild will eventually be removed by unknown people and that laws will be broken and parts never seen in public. An alternative is a proper recovery of parts with an agreed aim of use for restoration and display and or secure storage pending use.
It is wishful thinking to consider the wreckage as a memorial on its own.
Red Bull Air race Ascot 2016 £30 plus £30 for grandstand https://www.ascot.co.uk/airrace
so you see far more at legends flying.
Bruce and Mike J, thank you for the best summary of the rebuild identity situation. You have applied logic and common sense which is refreshing.
Does the film include footage of the flight along Blackpool seafront passing the tower? I was on the sand dunes at the airport and saw the pair head off that way before they made the dams fly over?
Thanks for adding more background info, hope this re construction can go undercover and PLEASE can some one repaint it, the camo looks the wrong shades?
Aeroplane Monthly has improved greatly. On the other hand the undercoat of graphics across pages and over enlargement of photos to fill pages is a bit annoying in Flypast, however its the mag style and as long as the content is fresh i can cope!
This flickr thread shows the main Hampden wreckage and the restoration included parts from 2 others, seems substantial original parts included so hardly a mock up in my view. https://www.flickr.com/photos/23057174@N02/2747336246/in/photostream/
The film is not dogged by a name, raising funds and the other aspects of a multi million pound business deal mean that filming does not start until everything is lined up. Peter Jackson did not get where he is today by missing out steps in the process.
So now this issue is out in the open on this forum perhaps some plan of action can be formed? This disposal of airframes is not yet urgent and hopefully can be sorted out well before threats of scrapping are made.
Seems odd that a science museum will remove all aircraft exhibits, perhaps they will keep a few. ?
Perhaps the new Blackpool museum will benefit if the undercover space is ready in time. And Hooton park could get the Aeroplane collection exhibits.
An exhibit should engage the viewer so audio visual displays will increase with virtual reality becoming more useful.Static airframes might not be enough although the keen enthusiast always likes to see them once. Displays will decrease in number but the quality will be constant and special effects included to compete with other attractions.
