It happened in September .and if an aircraft pases behind you its likely they had you in sight but you were not made aware so it becomes a sighting report. I had a Tornado pair do this to me when were in the C172,, saw one on one side and heard the other. Still worrying…

As a spotter active in those locations around those times I can add that I only ever saw and spoke to one local who had the use of a long lens at Warton bank lane and coverage was nothing like it is now, no step ladders. Salmesbury was even worse with few vantage points and tighter security. Workers at both sites were rightly fearful of loosing their jobs if seen with a camera and that even applies today.

As for the shows, content has shifted and rightly so. To see current front line military it is best to look on line for guides of where to view activity at bases, you can get close and not have to fight the traffic.Same with airliners.
But the scale of restorations has enabled a superb variety to fly at varied locations plus ground runners especially jets, even Great war and tween wars biplanes are more active than in the sixties.
