It would be a point defense fighter.
The internal payload would be very modest 2×500 lbs vietnam, iran iraq, Argentina, Venezuela, and the like would love them. If you work for Russia call me, Ill help you build it.
The problem with big 5th generation fighters is that they are exspensive. Mig 29 sized, with a small internal load. Keep the price under 50 mill. It would light the market on fire.
x2. Pointless thread.
Do you really expect innovation like the PAK-FA to come overnight, with engines and all? Remind me how many nations in the West are developing 5th gen (ok ok, disgusting term but whatever) fighters?
What markets are they losing exactly btw?
The Flanker has sold superbly.
The single engine market is not big enough to justify the significant domestic investment and development costs that are needed to make a decent product- one that the RuAF is not interested in.
Plus, the Chinese low end sales have been MiG-21 modernizations….hardly a big market Russia is missing on and one nobody can really compete with the Chinese on in terms of price in any case.
So I am not sure how they are losing low end markets (modernized MiG-29 will compete even worse with MiG-21 copies), let alone the high end market, where Russian offerings are very competitive to anything China exports…plus many markets are not available to Russian exports at all (NATO, etc).Compare the situation to 15 years ago.
The RuAF is now getting 60+ advanced Flankers per year alone. Hundreds of helicopters, some of them quite cutting edge.
And programs like T-50 and MS-21 show Russian aviation ain’t going anywhere. If anything, for the budget (and considered how much gets…lost in “administrative” costs) Russia punches far above its weight in terms of aviation production.
Im not saying they havent had great past success. But the flanker design is old, and the flanker replacment has issues.
Its not even about money IMO. Russian industry has always had a rep for being rugged and innovative. You guys are now trying to argue that there isnt a market for a cheap Mig 29 replacement for ROGUE states. I honestly believe the Russians are as smart and innovative as the west. Its one of 3 things.
1. Lack of incentives from mass consolidation
2. Lack of money
3. Loss of tech people.
Man its always about money and funding with you.
Lets put things in perspective.
Add together the LWF program, the AV8 the A-10
Part of the F-15, the tornado, sea harr and others.
Compare the costs? How many crashes during dev did all 5 programs have?….
Well let’s try to analyse a bit your list. We were talking about the F35 that for me is not only a stealth fighter. It is a fighter that sacrifice a lots of capabilities to be stealth. So from your list, which one are developing an aircraft that has as many constraint that th F 35? I don’t see a lot. The T50 is not sacrificing the basics for stealth. Then for the one that purchase the plane. How much from your list have the choice ? Not a lot. They purchased the F 35 not because it is good, not because it is late and so obsolet, not because it is expensive, but only because it is American that is the case for Canada, Turkey, Netherlands, Australia, Israel, South Korea, Japan, UK.
So 100 degrees AOA is compromised?
10k higher ceiling a F-16 is compromised?
50+ knots cruising speed is compromised?
1200nm range on only internal?
I would also like to note that modern systems and even the F-22/35 either use some kind of home on jam or passive esm to get a targeting solution.
Early you mentioned that the F-22 wasnt proven. You do realize it had its combat debut recently right? But dont let facts get in your way.
mig 31-bm,
Yes I have provided solid evidence to support this idea,
Since an E-scan radar can track an F35 at 60 Km as stated by EADS a modern state of the art ground based radar will be able to detect the F35 HUNDREDS of kilometers away.
Stealth was a silver bullet in the 90’s but this period is gone. Evolution in radar technology and other anti stealth techniques suddenly makes that metal golf or baseball ball visible at long ranges. Detection or tracking, a LO aircraft will be detected and engaged at long ranges nowadays and in the coming years.
Stealthy UCAVs can claim to achieve much higher all around stealth (Neuron, Taranis, X47 etc…) and gain some time before radar technology continues to evolve. This is the reason for the French air Force to combine rafales with stealth UCAV in the future around 2025-2030.
In the 2020’s F35 survivability against modern AESA GaN ground based radar will have nothing exceptional and won’t survive to this kind of threat. Back to basics and back to low level !
Stealth is still interesting but this is not a silver bullet anymore, especially for manned aircrafts like the F35. It is just one part of the survivability equation. nothing less nothing more.
Better to have it but it won’t make you survive alone today and in the coming years.
1. UhF VHF radar can give a general direction but isn’t accurate enough for a fireing solution.
2. Since the radar is over the Horizon it would still need to hand off to a x-band or a fighter radar. This kill chain is easily broken.
You havenot shown anything to support your assessment that grounds radar will be able to track F-35 hundreds of kilometer away
Smart-L a very big sea based radar , can only detect target with RCS = 0.001 m2 from 65 km , and to double range you have to increase power by 16 times 😉
not to mention Stealth aircraft like F-35 can jam enemy’s radar by their APG-81 or NGJ as well , and as we already know , stealth make jamming significantly more effectiveSo USA, Russia, UK, China, India, Japan, south Korea , Israel , Canada, Australia, Netherlands,Turkey, Italy are all idiotic since they spend so much money develop or buying stealth aircraft ? :highly_amused:
only the France get it right 😉
Its not worth it
The saddest part about this thread is you can buy a 5th generation fighter for under the price of a Rafael. You can stay at med to high alt, and do the mission 10 times more efficiently. Your still trying to sell us axes and arrows in an era of chainsaws and rifles.
Why dont 5th gen planes have these issues and can fire weapons at max range. And best air speed? The top 5 air forces of the world, must have it all wrong. Since this is the case B-1Bs And A-10s could strike bejing or the straight of Formosa easily. Why don’t 5th gen fighters receive a mission kill while maneuvering and dodging sams.
God bless your intelligence. You have shown the top 5 airforces on earth the way.
How will they build a 6th gen plane when a 5th gen isnt on the drawing board? Will they just skip a generation? Look at the teething issues with the T-50 and F-35.
The. Age of low level is over, here are a few lessons learned.
1. Iraq used cell phone spotters, and AA traps during GW2 to mission kill deep penetrating Apache strikes.
2. Package Q in GW 1 showed all you need to do to mission kill a strike package, is force it to dump a weapons load maneuvering.
3. Low level suffers a range penalty.
4. Tor-m1 and other point defense systems make lo level a death sentence.
5. Look down fighters and awacs.
6. In deserts and oceans you dont have terrain to. Hide behind Google British Tornado losses Gw1
A better discussion would be “What should be the Rafael follow on post 2030. As of now we are trying to keep up with Eastern anti-stealth radars and tactics. And your going back to low level where a jihadist sheep herder with a attitude and a Ak ok r Rpg can lob golden BBs at you. Lets move on
