With all of attention being given to advanced A2D2 weapons and strategies, its it a bit overrated? Considerable treasure has been spent on
1. Home on jam weapons
http://www.militaryaerospace.com/articles/2014/11/smart-weapons-ew.html
2. Advanced stealth types ,F-22/35
3. Escort jamming
4. Massive cruise missile stock piles.
Couldn’t most of these threats from Kalingrad to Hainan island be dealt with using massive brute force and conventional weapons?
100 Typhoons day raiding Kalingrad?
500 TLAMs? 400 cruise missiles fire from Ohios and B-52s?Discuss. Could 100 Rafaels shut down Kalingrad? Are we over estimating A2D2?
So the true value is the military posturing?
The F-35s with Amraams in HOJ mode would decimate the Su34s. But Im thinking of an entire IADS network.
While war isnt likely you always want to be prepared. After WW1 the world powers could not fathom war again on that scale.
Use them to bargain. Remember how the U.S. used Jupiter missiles in Turkey to bargain with during the Cuban missile crisis? China if you want our shoals removed, then remove yours.
I would literally make the the shoal from end to end VLS launchers. I would greatly increase the resources needed to defend Chinese shoals.
Actually we might be under treaty obligation to defend scarbourgh.
At first blush, Scarborough presents a possible red line for the Philippine-U.S. military alliance. As a former U.S. territory transferred to the Philippines, it may be covered by the Mutual Defense Treaty that obligates the United States to help defend not only the Philippine metropolitan territory, but also “island territories under its jurisdiction.”

I didn’t realize the shoal was transferred to the Philippines years ago. We are obligated by treaty. Suddenly building our own dredged reef and defending it doesn’t sound like a bad idea. It may be prudent and stop a wider conflict.
Im not confused.
1. The island is disputed.
2. There is substantial reclamation on the island. Regardless if we have a island or not ocean was reclaimed, so my point stands.
3. We have had advanced weapons placed on the island’s in an intimidating manor. We have had attempts at intimidation regardless if the U.S. is present or not. I do recall that oil rigs have been positioned, fishers harrassed, and even nuclear war threatened with or without the presence of the U.S.
I don’t know if your towing the party line, insulting our intelligence, or simply re-writing history.
Yes, it was woody island. The island is both disputed and has had recent reclamation. And no they didn’t use S-400 but HQ-9
I think you are mixing the idea that “legal actions” cannot be “provocative actions”.
Any nation has the right to perceive an action as provocative regardless of its legality, because the perception of provocation is ultimately dependent on their own national interests, rather than international law.
Putting it another way — one can conduct immensely provocative actions while remaining comfortably within the bounds of legality.China has not placed S-400s (or any SAMs) or artillery or tactical fighters on any of its reclaimed islands. China doesn’t even have S-400s yet.
They’ve only deployed fighters and SAMs to Yongxing island — but that is not one of the reclaimed islands that have been dredged, and weapons and fighters have been deployed to Yongxing routinely for years now.
You forgot the artillary. And didnt we recently have reports of fighters deployed to a reclaimed island?
The effect of the provocative US air and naval presence in the SCS has only encouraged China to go for militarization of the islands, which the US is against. So the US policy, like many in the world, is self-defeating. It can’t succeed.
China got a lesson in power politics when Japan took control of the disputed Senkakus in the East China Sea and the US said it would defend Japan there. The Potsdam Declaration (Japan’s surrender) was supposed to prevent Japanese postwar expansion to islands, but it didn’t happen thanks to the US. Japan won and China lost in the ECS. China then vowed that the SCS would be different, is my take. The US (Carter) demands that countries stop developing islands have gone unheeded, especially by China. What can the US do about island development against one country (China) doing it? Nothing, which is why Filipinos and Vietnamese can’t be reassured. ….Who should care? There are more important issues……The lesson provided by US/Japan is that possession (of islands) is 9/10 of the law, so China jacked up their possession. Accept it. Lesson taught, lesson learned.
So Japan building a light house is equal to China building air bases, S-400s, and placing artillary and Tactical fighters there? I SEE..
APPLES AND ORANGES? Or apples and hand grenades?
It seems like things are movinf faster than realized. U.S. allowed weapons sales to Vietnam today.

I wonder what toys they will get?
Msphere lets talk apples to apples here.
If the U.S. dredged up islands off the coast of Venezuela and placed thaad and F-22s there you would hear about it.
China wont bargain if they feel they can bully. Haveing 5 islands dredged in the spartlys, or missiles and Marines On Taiwan would give us somthing to bargain with.
It would seem that the only logical thing would be to dredge our own islands. They would be joint bases with Taiwan the Philippines and Japan. I China wants them moved either use physical force or bargain to have them removed. F-35Bs in Taiwan or THAAD in Taiwan or even a joint base would definitely get Chinas attention. Its not about the capability per se, its about Honor.

It doesn’t look good.
How would you propose to stop them? :eagerness:
You only have a few options at this point.
1. Do nothing.
2. Start the dredging of your own shoals with heavy fortifications.
3.Move Heavy tactical assets to the Philippines. Land launced TLAMs land based Aegis. F-35Bs. Hold all there new islands at threat.
4. Move a mobile sea base platform into the region.
5. Use Taiwan or the Philippines as a bargain chip. IE. Taiwan will get F-35s if you start dredging.
6. Do nothing.
The glitches shall be ironed out gradually. But the aircraft will forever stay an epitome of a failed approach, methinks. Cannot think of anything getting a bad reputation even remotely comparable to the beating this bird is getting.. It’s not like other aircraft are not computerized – how in hell can it happen that you get only one bird out of six to the air? How many would you need to go two steps further and launch one live missile? Twenty?
Yeah im glad other programs didnt have problems. Im glad we have never had a falling leaf issue, or a flat spin issue.
Im glad we havent hada pilot induced occilation resulting in a crash. Im glad other planes arnt lawn darts or thuds. Im glad we haven’t had any planes computer crash after crossing the international date line, or give a Pilot Hypoxia. The F-35 is the 1st plane ever to have issues. Cancel it right away!
Mcain kicking against the pricks on the bulk buy. Your going to buy them come hell or high water. You may as well get a deal.
