From CNN reports January 17, 1991, at 2.30 am Baghdad time
” UN coalition F16XL and F15 fighters swept clear the night skies of Iraq today as the war to retake Kuwait began. American B70F Valkyrie bombers swept through Iraqi air defences at Mach 3 destroying army barrack, airfields and important communication nodes. British TSR2 Mark 4 strike planes supported by RAF F3 Mk1 Tomcat fighters destroyed radars, SCUD launchers and other targets of opportunity with ALARM missles, PGMs and cluster bombs as they cleared corridors for other strike planes. Rumours also suggest the presence of two prototype US Navy A12 bombers being used operationally over Iraq in an attempt to prove their worth before Congress. Sources suggest they violated well defended airspace over Kuwait with ease and dropped bombs on a tank park on the outskirts of Kuwait City and then recovered to Diego Garcia AH56 Cheyenne attack Helicopters also launched limited attack on Iraqi ground forces near the Saudi border to limit incursion by Iraqi special units”
Ok, really really inaccurate but it sounds good.
Um, PILOTGHT, I think you’ll find that I’ve had an identical topic running for the last two days. Makes this a bit redundant.
“B52s, Phantoms, Aardvarks, Skyhawks, P-3s. What else is out there?”
I was just dreaming, operating costs be damned.
As someone said F5s would be good. Just a suggestion but with all the trouble caused by the Americans using Shannon airport on trans-Atlantic flights it could be a good idea to extort something out of the Americans for free. They should have some some good stuff mothballed at Davis-Monthan boneyard or elsewhere that the Irish could get. Any suggestions? B52s, Phantoms, Aardvarks, Skyhawks, P-3s. What else is out there?
Actually I just figured it out. Ireland doesn’t have an Ikea store. The Irish could build the Swedes one for free if the Swedes give them a squadron of Viggens before they trash them or use them for target practise 😀
Oh, Ekranoplans. The Caspian Sea Monsters are an absolutely amazing sight.
Actually I just realised that Ireland does have a territorial dispute that some countries would go to war over, Rockall. If you don’t know the story go look it up here

With all that gas money up for grabs seizing and holding the island isn’t that silly an idea. Who is seriously going to go to war over it? You just need to have a little muscle to back it up and it could pay for a the small military expansion.
Just dreaming.
Hm, just went to get f16xl info to make comparisons with the Mirage and info for it is rather sparse, there are only a couple of different pictures aswell
Oops, the pic didn’t post on the last one. Her she is
Sigh. Sorry for borrowing this with out permission. See http://www.globalaircraft.org for others
AH-56 Cheyenne 😀
Hm, the Irish Aircorps should need say 12-15 jets that can outpace any current commercial or biz jets, with nothing more complicated than a cannon and a couple of older model sidewinders or something like that. Financing shouldnt be too hard. Withdraw from service the alouttes, beechcraft, cessna, gazelles, dauphin, the defender, one or maybe two of the ships from the Navy, and put a couple of cents on the pint of Guiness:D . Really the Corps need maybe another CASA, a few more light helicopter like the Squirrels they with the surveillance gear and provision for a trainable gun or something akin, a couple more helicopters for Coastguard duties cos its a huge coastline to cover with one S61 plus 3 or 4 medium lift helicopters, something cheap like overhauled Mil Hips. They have a lot of responsibility for such a small nation and a small force like that, is required but still hard to finance.
