Flying Cobra to come to UK
Hello All, Firstly, Happy New Year.
On the subject of Cobras, did you know that there will be a flying Cobra on the UK Airshow scene later this year! You will be able to get up close and take a look!
The only other flying Cobra this side of the US in the Red Bull one in Austria/Switzerland.
http://www.huey.co.uk has restored one but it is still in Olympia, Seattle awaiting export/import and then UK CAA permit to fly processing. I know this because im the Chief Pilot and i will be one of the lucky chaps who will be flying /displaying it!
The owner and pilot, Phil Connolly will have a 3 ship Vietnam Classic Flight here in the UK to fly at Airshows! Take a look on our website. On the homepage, left side, look at our aircraft! The UH-1H, OH-6 and Cobra are there.
Its quite a serious process export/importing these flying rare beasts so full credit has to go to Phil here…its his vision and long term dream!
Fly Safe, as always……’You call, We haul’ …..
Cockpits at Al Ain 2010
Hello All,
Just to add that there will be 3 UK based cockpits at Al Ain 2010 Airshow for the public to have a sit in and enjoy …’Cockpitfest goes International’.
After splendid reports from the Annual Newark, UK Cockpitfest, Flying Aces Ltd have approached and set up in partnership with Lakes Lightnings, a 3 Cockpit display to travel out to the UAE for the event.
The Cockpits are Lakes Lightnings Harrier T4, Lightning F6 (XS922) and Dave Webbs minted Hunter GA11, WV381 making its public debut.
They road moved over Xmas and should be there about now after a container ship ride!
Flypast will be generating a report on the event in a forthcomming issue so, go out and buy a subscription…
Cheers all,
Fly Safe,
Yes you are right Colin
yes you are technically right Colin ….when she was with you at Abingdon in 2009, she was somewhat tatty, broken and in a pretty sorry state but the public DID see her for the first time in ages…. i give you that….my mistake.
BUT NOW … she is ‘unveiled’ in her sparkly, renovated, restored, ‘yes you can climb in’ display costume as Dave has wanted her to be seen by the public… a pheonix from the ashes so to speak so folks, on her return to the UK, i recommend this superb cokpit for your events/fates etc…. unless Dave swaps her for some pedigree racing Camels.
Fly Safe, as always
I will ask George Aird
Hello folks,
I will ask George Aird next time i see him as he regularly turns up at Blackpool ANT Flying Club to go flying with his mates in a Club owned Cherokee!
What a super Gentleman he is! …totally unassuming, quietly reserved and a pleasure to talk to and whats more, willing to talk about times gone by…
He is of the same mould as the legendary Jimmy Dell… a very rare breed of aviator and a top class Chap.
TSR 2 seat at F.A.S.T. Museum, Farnborough.
I seem to recall that there is a complete TSR 2 seat in the F.A.S.T Museum Farnboroughs collection along with a splendid array of pressure helmets.
There is also a saved cockpit section at Brooklands.
On a side note, Corgi have recently brought out a limited edition 1:72 scale TSR 2 …quite a gem really!
Fly Safe
Greetings All,
Ive not been on the forum for a while and missed this until now.
Im glad Sywell have the Hunter intake blanks as ‘Lakes Lightnings’, owners of T7 XL618 already have a set of intake blanks for her which was unbeknown to NAM.
The process of ‘de-salinating’ XL618 from years sat by the Caernarfon sea will start in September.
Questions have been asked about colour schemes and Id just like to say, we propose to keep her in ‘training raspberry ripple’ colours as she already is IF NAM agree to that proposal.
Fly safe
Good to hear Sisyphus G-BEJD is progressing with a view to being self supporting by Summers end……. Nice one team.
It seems like it was only yesterday since ‘Lakes Lightnings’ donated Sisyphus to Speke back in July/Aug 2010 after saving her from the scrapman!
Darren is making good inroads into her restoration and I hope he posts into the public domain some of the superb photos he has sent us at ‘Lakes Lightnings’ of her ‘current progress’.
She is indeed in good hands!
Fly Safe …
Lakes Lightnings had the privilege of being friends of test Pilot Jimmy Dell who flew 12 of the 24 TSR2 flights…… (Beamont flew 10 including the first one of course, and Don Knight flew 2). Jimmy had the most hours and experience of the TSR 2.
We would like to bring along a Jimmy Dell signed wooden model of TSR 2 to this prestigious event!
Around the dinner table, we used to hang on his every word as he recounted tales of woe and wonderment from his TP days on Lightnings/TSR2/Jaguar development along with ‘others’ and latterly as Tornado Project Manager…. a real gentleman, sadly missed.
Aviation Guild of Artists Painter, Jon Westwood, Westy-Art has painted a picture of TSR2 and had a limited run signed by Don Knight!
See you all there!
‘Lakes Lightnings’ will be bringing along Lightning F6 XS922 once again!
If we have extra transport, then maybe bring along our GR3 XZ131 and/or JP Mk4 XS181….watch this space.
Happy New Year all….. N & H
Yes, XM172 resides up in Spark Bridge, Cumbria as part of the ‘Lakes Lightnings’ collection.
She has been up there since 14 August 2006 !
Clarksons classic was just a TV stunt, Barry Parkhouse owned the machine at the time of filming and did so all the way up to Aug 2006 when ‘Lakes Lightnings’ bought it.
‘Lakes Lightnings’ collection comprises of 11 airframes/cockpit nose sections in all and is available for viewing, at mutual convenience and STRICTLY BY PRIOR APPOINTMENT via email: lakeslightnings@Hotmail.co.uk. we are NOT a museum but a private collection which we like to share with likeminded people.

Lightning F1 XM144 nose section
Greetings All,
Lightning F1 XM144 nose along with a F1 ‘Witches Hat’ Lightning tail fin left Spark Bridge, Cumbria some weeks back now for Shannon.
The plan is to have her under cover and restored so I believe.
