    Lightning T5 instrument crate

I too am just about to start an indoor, Winter project on my Lightning T5 instrument crate!

Its taken me some while to find the bits (still some missing) so now the fun begins on those looming dark Wintery nights…. Enjoy!

Besides…. what else would one be doing with the airshow season now closed in the UK?

I was there back in Jan 67

Just to say well done to all for securing the funding to restore K7. Nice one.

I was there back in Jan 67 as a 9 yr old watching with my Dad from the eastern shore side of Coniston water! I didnt see the crash but i did get my feet wet with the wake wave of the first run!

I saw him practice run over the days/weeks?? before. I cant really remember all that but i DO REMEMBER SITTING IN THE COCKPIT on one occasion …Yippeeee.

Simple Answer … Go Part Nuclear

Simple Answer … Go Part Nuclear….. or back to the stone age. (Now ive done it ! Stirring up a hornets nest!)

France seems to have a good fuel/energy policy using Nuclear to dovetail into its power generating infrastructure. Sounds obvious to me to have ‘some of this’ and ‘some of that’ to mix and match.

Anyway, Mother Nature will sort us humans out if she gets fed up with us. One big Volcano or two and its goodbye to us self opinionated, bi-pedal lifeforms!

Or the cows could take their revenge and wipe us all out for the next 10,000 years….. wonder what it would be like to come back as a cockroach??? At least id have WINGS and be able to fly…yipee!

Sorry to be flipant (sp) folks but lets hear it for a good airshow … we need to get out more and have some fun. Life is serious enough and we are so fragile…. Enough rambling…. Fly Safe

    Hurrah for Cockpitfest! ! !

    Hurrah for Cockpitfest!

I TOTALLY agree with the comments made at post #78 by Ross McNeill. We do it because we just want to and because its FUN.

It costs us all time, money and effort and we dont begrudge a moment of it.

For those of you out there considering comming next year on the 10th event, GO ON, GIVE IT A GO….. if you dont like it, dont do it again…but im sure you will have a great time ….. just like the rest of us.

    ANYTHING AVIATION and you’re in!

Test Pilot Jimmy Dell -Another fitting tribute – 29 May 08

Just to say that the Daily Telegraph has today, 29th May 08 published a superb detailed obituary celebrating Jimmy’s career in aviation.

Those of us who were fortunate enough to know him personally feel a great sense of loss at his departure and are celebrating his memory in various ways.

Kev Darling has just published a new Lightning book with a dedication to him. The LPG are dedicating the next Lightning Fast Taxy Day at Bruntingthorpe to him. His ghost written memoirs entitled ‘Tarnish 6’ will soon be published and we at ‘Lakes Lightnings’ have the privilage of having Jimmy as an absent patron to our Lightning collection.

We have on display a section of our collection dedicated to Jimmy and all his collegues at English Electric/BAC.

I have written a missive for Flypast magazine about our recent times with Jimmy which i hope will be published in a near future issue.

    Chinook Lift not an option

Refering to an earlier mention of a Chinook lift … may i just say that i have ‘friends in right places’ and i did take a serious look at this option on behalf of Charles thru Matty some while back.

At best, a Chinook can lift 8 metric tons but not very far so, for that reason alone, it was a non starter UNLESS lots of stripdown takes place.

I gather other plans are afoot and all i can say is that ‘Lakes Lightnings’ wishes you, whoever you are all the very best with the life support recovery of this fine living, breathing beast.

    Scrap metal for China

Well chaps, following on to say the obvious but if we dont save these airframes from the environment/scrapmen then these beauties would be on their way to China to make pots, pans and trinkets for sure.

RAF Millom is an up and comming venture which has been long established in a small way … now she is growing into a BIG Game contender and im onboard with their policy directive 100%…. thats why some of my airframes have gone their way.

As for collecting anything and everything, its it abit like my philosophy on flying … “if it flys, i will give it a go at least once”… Glynn and his superb team are people who ‘Do’ rather than stand back and watch and they deserve all the credit duely deserved.

Enough babbling on my part …. F104 starfighter has been sold … maybe, (i stress maybe) a Draken in the offering on the horizon????

    A Sanctuary for Lost Airframes

Refering to the above ‘bleat’, i have to say that RAF Millom is a safe haven for vanishing airframes ..thank you all… i should know as ‘Lakes Lightnings’ aquired the Shorts 330, HS748, Jetstream from Blackpool and the RN Whirlwind from Chorley Fire Trg Ground and has subsequently passed them on to a very good home at Millom.

Glynn and his team are TERIFFIC! … the future looks bright with RAF Millom Museum… Im sure one of ‘Lakes Lightnings’ will end up there sometime soon.!

    Jimmys funeral – 3rd April 2008

Just to say thank you to Kevin Dell and family for allowing all of us to attend Jimmys’ funeral, held today in St Thomas Church, St Annes.

A congregation of 200 plus attended the church service to say a fond farewell, before a private family cremation.

The service was a fitting send off. It began with the lowering of The R.A.F.A. standard as Jimmy entered the church draped in an R.A.F. Ensign.

A series of appropriate hymns and prayers followed by an excellent eulogy by legedary Test Pilot, colleague and friend, Don Knight.

On departure from the church Kevin and family personally thanked everyone individually as they left the church.

A fitting send off for Jimmy, one of lifes true heros and gentlemen, and a good friend to many.

Gone but never will be forgotten…..chocks away
