Viscount, I anticipate that in 1984 Upper Heyford may not have had a Mandatory Radio Area but please look.

Roger Freeman’s article in the August Air Pic quotes N5232V as being DF-V 122762, with a photo to prove it.

My photo shows DF-V but 122761 ( although serials were changed during filming ).

As he says N5229V was DF-T and remained at Manston it now seems possible that although DF-V was going to be scrapped at Bovingdon it actually flew to Biggin Hill for scrapping, possiblty as the MoD storage charges were higher at Bovingdon. So my photo appears to be N5232V.

    Supermunks

The term Supermunk means different things to different people. There is nothing very Super about a Mk. 22 with a Lycoming O-360 fitted.

In the US, where the term originated, they meant clipping the wings, enlarging the rudder area and fitting a Lycoming IO-540 of some description. A few had Rangers, removed from Fairchild FW 24’s but that involved moving the oil cooler to behind the rear seat to prevent a very forward CofG.

G-IDDY was the closest we got to that.

    Classic car

Look at Rolss-Royces which are too old to attract road tax and too young to attract high prices.

The downside is that arriving in a R-R is not a good idea when asking for a pay rise.

40 years ago I was a rep with a Jaguar, the competition had Citroen vans and a number of new customers came our way because we were seen as a bit up market !!

    Chipmunk

The Chipmunk started using a cartridge, like a slow burning 12 bore shotgun cartridge. The same system was used on the Auster 9.

Somebody in MoD decided one day to give them a shelf life, condeming a large amount of the stock. ICI, who made the cartidges went ” Yippee ” and pushed the price up – so the MoD fitted electric starters from Skeeter helicopters.

The CAA accepted cartridge starters and I purchased 1000 cartridges at the pre-increase price fior use on my Chipmunks and Mk. 9’s. When supplies became low and I found the new price equated to about £ 15.00 a start we reverted to swinging my hand.

    O-320

I have a 1000 hour O-320A ( 150 hp ) currently with Richard Isenburg at Southen for strip inspection.

It was last run in 2002, was shockloaded when in a PA-22 which had the mogas mod approved.
