I knew you would understand that – general note to all really.

    Andy

Could find no siblings nor remarriages. The mother did not remarry. could not find any wills either. Death certificates are the next though will do a deeper search tonight for siblings.

As mentioned, I think the identity needs to be confirmed before everyone goes to try and find Copping’s family and declare his aircraft has been found.

When the serial is confirmed then Innsworth/AHB want to be notified as it involves a missing pilot.

I would not like to be a family member who gets told his planes been found and then find out it is not correct.

IF it is Copping, you therefore might be in a good position to help but lets wait until the identity is confirmed. Should only be a couple more days.

Andy, also found the divorce in 1928 with another women involved. Who would be classed as the next of kin – mother or father. Mother died in 1967 in Rockford. Additionally, if on a repair, transfer flight would he have had his kit with him Sounds as though they were also in retreat. Lot of North African log books were lost especially when the pilot was killed/missing.

    Hi

I agree with Buz as well. Until we know a c/n and serial it is all conjecture.

This is where Copping would have been heading for I believe.

From RAF Flying Training and Support Units – Sturtivant/Hamlin?Halley by Air Britain Publications.

No 3 (Middle East) Aircraft Repair Unit was formed 15.5.42 , ex Kittyhawk Repair Section at ISMAILIA, Egypt which is right up by the canal.

Not secret and on the web, but the parents died in Rochford.

Before going too deep, serial needs to be confirmed first then it will be a case of finding Coppings in your part of the world.

Only question is, if Copping was flying back to an RSU, would he had a kit bag, log books etc. Additionally the airframe should have had all its maintenance records. These might still be in the door pocket but not holding out much hope.

I can assure you the people who you want to know DO KNOW.

Been a week since reported and 4 weeks since discovery.

There is a lot of things going on in the background that most of us are unaware of.

Frustrating it is but all we can hope for is a good outcome.

It looks more and more likely it is Copping’s P40.

Also ‘Stocky’ Edwards story book is free for Kindle and also on line if you look hard enough.

Think I posted a link way back either on here or WIX

Has book carries a diary, loses, claims, missing, killed etc etc.

Don’t you just love google and the internet.
Some other good news, but yourself (Bruce) and Paul already know that.:)

    Amazing

    Yep, I see HS-B

Still no visible serial but we know where to look.

A certain ‘Stocky’ Edwards of 260Sqn flew HS-B often and he is still with us in Canada.

Unfortunately everything being prised open to see if anything valuable πŸ™

    Not good but amazing anyway.

    Bit more by someone there

The Egyptian government have been informed by the military. The army took only ammunition of the airplane to not hit the wrong hands. At the moment the plane is in the same state as in the movie. there is practically no possibility of the devastation of this plane because itο»Ώ is army complex – patrolled byο»Ώ the army.
The plane was found incidentally – do not do the explorations..
in mid-April, I’ll try to go to the place where the plane – it will put more videos.

or now, I found this information:
    AIRPLANE H87A-3
    PART NO. 87-69-714R
    CAL. 50, CAP.155ο»Ώ RDS
    R.H. GUN BOX NO 2
I have a few pictures from the cockpit – I will try to end the week to include them on the internet – give them a link

    regards

I think it should be a case of swapsys.

Royal Air Force Museum donate there P40N to El Alamein Museum and some money (lottery or whatever), Egypt pay the finder a handsome finders fee and the complete time capsule RAF Kittyhawk goes to RAF Museum to sit next to Bf109G-2 Black 6.

    Buz

Did not think there were any physical differences (at least visibible in the video) between a Curtiss built P40E to British orders and one to lend lease orders.

DC, nope, but still looking. What do you think?

    Ian,

Ammo boxes might have had painted serials but were interchangable so could not be relied on to ID the airframe.

FHC Fw190A-5 had four ammunition boxes and one had the serial from another A-4 model. The battery box cover had a serial from another as well. Need to look at the aiframe.

Pilot back armour has construction number. Serial would be fainly visible in a good photo. There are other plates. Trouble it is not in front of me (and most of the others on this site) to confirm πŸ™

The original poster did confirm the ID is known and the RAFM are aware of it so obviously officialdom are keeping quiet as you would expect if there are discussing the options with Egypt!

Could well be put on display at El Alamein museum but would prefer to see her side by side with Black 6. Give the P40N at the RAFM to Egypt!!!

P40N rebuild from bits against wartime veteran. No other wartime surviving P40’s from ME exist (except the Italian one recovered from Anzio if that counds).

    Lovely video

Shows the canopy was jammed. They tried to open with a bit of oil and failed. As mentioned, standard procedure to close after landing.

Outline of serial should still be there but need to look at photos not video.

Shows lots of damage to underside as you would expect.

I would hope that the ammo boxes and even ammo can be made safe and returned.

    No evidence of parachute?

Trying to work out if the radio is missing in the rear fusealge (looking aft?)

A beautiful time capsule and I am now more worried than ever about how long she will survive (after being there for 70 years with literally NO previous visitors).

    Not convinced!!!:)

Looks like a film set, painted backdrop and GRP aircraft. Not real of course!!:D:D:D

    OMG and Holly Cow.

Real it is and more importantly March 2012 – 70 years most likely after loss!!!!!

    A very happy person

    David,

I am sure the identity can be narrowed down.

Short and easy way is to see a photo of the serial or construction number.

Long and easy way is to go to PRO/Kew and look at 260Sqn records and also Form 78’s construction cards.

Assuming it is 260Sqn hopefully dates for missing Kittyhawk IA and missing pilots can be worked out.

Been promised some more photos so we will see.

Whether a collector is on the case depends on when these photos were taken.
