P1344 was one of two Hampdens that tried to land at the Luftwffe base at Petsamo. It is unclear which Hampden was the other one.
Graham,
Got the same book and corresponded with Geoffrey for a number of years and helped out with the book. Going to have a look through my lever arch files as have a lot of correspondence, letters and photos relating to Operation Orator-Ham.
Catanach’s Hampden AT109 was forced down in Norway almost certainly carried the Coastal Command colours and the ID letters seem to be red. Only issue is it belongs to 455Sqn and not 144.
1 or 2 Hampdens actually tried to land at Petsamo (Luftwaffe base) though not sure if P1344 was one of them.

Looks like no Bomber Command history, only Coastal Command and a single operation sortie to Norway with no result.

Looks like red as well but nothing seems to show if the Coastal Command colours were applied.
I would have thought red serial on black ground was the finish I would expect from BC. It could easily be red over grey? Are the ID letters red or black as well?

Hi Tin Triangle/Graham,
Obviously P1344 operated with bomber command and was finished with the black sides/undersides and green/brown upper. That is what we are seeing.
144 and 455 were transferred to coastal command and were there as a deterant/strike capability with regards the Tirpitz threat. I was under the impression (either read in a book or the squadron records) that they were finished in the grey CC colours.
Need to look further.

Looking good and glad she is gradually getting there.
Does anyone know what scheme she is being completed in? TO me it does not seem to be the final markings of P1344 when she was with 144 Sqn? 144 Sqn had been transferred to Coastal Command so she was not finished in black?
Hampden TB to have Temperate Sea Scheme uppersurfaces (Extra Dark Sea Grey and Dark Slate Grey) with Sky undersurfaces OR Night undersurfaces,
This is from looking at quite a few 144 and 455 Hampden photo from Russia I have.

Hurricane Z5252 was on of 15 assembled in Archangel. It was a spare and never coded either with squadron code/id letter or soviet number. It has been gifted to the state and as far as I am aware it is still in storage in Russia. Other 151 Wing Hurricanes survive – but only 81 Sqn. Z5207 in thruxton and Z5227 in the States. Z5252 was also flown by Safanov.

Great stuff. Time to send a small invoice to Planinum.
Look forward to seeing her in her new authentic colours of ‘White 7’ of 4./JG5 😉
Probably not.

Confirmed by a Norwegian friend who was there and took similar photos.
Remember seeing these photos a long time ago.
This is DR393, P3351, engine Merlin XX Serial 94573(/A349034) now flying in France.

Water as in lakes? Still looking for German, lend lease and Soviet types in the Arctic Circle lakes. This is ongoing every year but with thousands of lakes it will take a while.
Former East German lakes – evidence of Fw190A, Fw190D, Bf110’s, Bu131 and even a MiG 15/17 (I’ve seen in video) in the German lakes. All lost April/May 1945 except the MiG!. Still there. All belong to the German State with no negotiation. Hence no-one has gone looking. Even the 1990 recovery of a Fw190D from Schwerin Lake was slated as one ID within a small search area and found to be another! Norway/Finland and Northern Russia will continue for a few years yet.

Happy Birthday Tim. Have a great day.
Bf109E 1983
Mark12, thanks for posting.
That’s a superb restoration, shame (in some ways) that it’s going abroad-while the Germans of course have every right to fly their heritage, it would be nice to have at least one genuine Bf109 on the UK circuit!
Can anybody help with history etc of Werk Nr.1983? Is this an Eastern Front recovery?

There was a link above and a few more.

Red number (not known and nor is the pilot as he survived and walked back to his lines). Even with log books and books on JG5 it has not been possible yet to discover who he was.
14./JG77 or 5./JG5 (depending on date) has been a good source for surviving Bf109’s. Bf109E 1407 ‘Red 5’ is in the Berlin DTM, Bf109E 3523 ‘Red 6’ is in Chino and now Bf109E 1983 Red ? is nearing completion.
If marked up historically, it might look something like Red 6.
