Powerandpassion, that’s fantastic! Are you aware of any other bits and bobs that may have survived?
There have been some fascinating desert restorations. But I was genuinely hoping there might be bits and bobs in a private collection somewhere, akin to the Hs 129 cockpit in Australia.
I have to throw in my 2 pence, as having visited the museum and being blown away by the extraordinary kindness by the team at KBBM, my experience there has been the complete opposite.
They’ve had some very serious thefts there in the past, which as has been fairly pointed out, is a problem affecting all museums. If I understand correctly, they’ve also had a number of items for display donated by families of airmen, who stipulated that no photographs be taken of said artifacts. I can fully respect and understand that.
I would implore people to give it a visit; not only does it have a superb collection, but it is the definitive source of Battle of Britain items.
As said, was very much taken back by the way I was treated there, they were extremely friendly and answered all my research based questions comprehensively.
Are there any surviving Vickers 40mm S guns in Museums? A cursory search yields only Rolls-Royce versions that have been preserved.
This is the only other photograph I can find of L1007, and as you can see, doesn’t really yield that much more information
Much obliged, DazDaMan. I’ve heard variations of that some time ago, but as mentioned earlier, would be nice if anyone is aware of a telltale photograph.
Indeed, albeit I can’t elaborate further.
It seems AL 557’s stint in 120 was quite brief, but I still would venture that the colours it would have used would be the usual grey/ white.

Similar sites that are databases for RAF aircraft
The above mentioned book (which is very comprehensive), and good old Google searching.
Do you happen to have further information to clarify the question I have? Would be fantastic if you do.
Does anyone have photographs of AL557 from its time with 120 Squadron? I can’t find anything, and it’s not been without effort. I also happen to have the excellent “B-24 LIBERATOR IN RAF COASTAL COMMAND SERVICE”, but there’s no mention of this aircraft within.
Of particular interest would be precisely what colour scheme it had when it was with 120 Sqdn. I’m going to assume temperate sea/ slate/ extra dark grey and white, but would be nice to have confirmation of that.
That’s incredible, Mark!
I really hope there’s a forward fuselage out there somewhere. There’s something brilliant about the stretched, unusual GR 31!
I’m wondering if there are any surviving parts of the RAAF GR Mk 31s?
As far as I know, there aren’t any complete airframes, but would be fantastic if there was at least something around from these unique aircraft.
Found it!
It was indeed a Tempest.
