I vaguely remembered some interesting title music….but I still can’t quite bring it to mind how it went.:o..even though I could nearly hear it when reading the book.;)
Clive.
Interesting that this thread has come up…
I was, by chance, given a copy of the accompanying paperback book the other day….
Clive.
I seemed to think that Roger Windley had 2 or 3 Whirlwinds….in blue and light grey.? ..a subsequent check on g-info finds them as G-BKHA/B/C
XP328? seems to ring a bell for one …used as radio callsign too…
..and did one later end up on its side.?
Then there was G-RW WW.
Clive.
Thank you for the new postings to this thread..:)
I look forward to seeing AHSO about once more….
I wonder,…is there any news on G-AHCK.??
Clive.
Spotted today..11-28am…passing just South of Gunby, E. Lincs…routing inland from the Wash…a very powerful but small light single piston low wing monoplane with fixed gear (tail dragger)…travelling at a pretty fair lick…heading West South West… Possibly an aerobatic type.?
..any info.?
Clive.
This afternoon spotted a light coloured Piper Cub.?….cruising about very slowly.:)..approaching Gunby E. Lincs from the South East..and manoeuvring about the area for a while.
It has been around and about quite a lot recently.:)..wondering if it could be G-BIYY.??…..
Clive.:)
Good to see some more photos and memories added to this thread.:)
Was it you that sprayed our garden and whitened our greenhouse windows…;)
I think the last aerial spraying done was on contract pea crops and possibly Potatoes…?
…but I think slug baiting may have continued a bit longer.?? Now the preserve of all terrain 4 wheel motorbike things….
Thank you,
Clive.
3-16pm today…Spitfire manoeuvring with much verve…spotted out to the West looking from Gunby E. Lincs….. MJ627 ??
Clive.:)
Hello Tony,
Good to see the photos….:)
..and I look forward to you finding further to add.;)
Thank you,
Clive.
I think it was MJ627 about this evening passing SW of Spilsby, E.Lincs at 6-08pm.
Clive.
Thank you Turbycat for adding your Skegness memories….
I hope you can find some of your old photos to add at some stage.:).
I did once come across a Jaguar fly through at Skegness….we had heard the radio call as we landed and had just got taxied back and stepped out to see them belt by…
Had the same in later days at Gamston with a very low level Fouga Magister passing by as we had just vacated the runway….
Also thank you to l.garey for posting on with the photo of G-AHAL.
All the best,
Clive.:)
Thank you Dave for adding the documentation that you have found.:)….it all adds to the memories of Skegness Aerodrome…which was the whole idea when I started this thread back in 2003:eek:;)…
It has never ceased to amaze me how this thread has bounced back time and time again….all as a result of someone thinking back to their days at Skegness…typing it into a search engine..hey presto this thread is found….a new forum member comes online…and more memories are recorded..:)
I still quietly hope that more pleasure flying photos may one day appear…they will be tucked away in everday folks holiday snaps of their Butlins holidays…
I remember the banner towing…the one that comes to mind at first was a police crime prevention week? banner…towed by Pawnee G-BILL..;)
G-AHSO was tow fitted too…that slowed it down a bit…..
Thank you again,
Clive.
Mine arrived today….it didn’t have too far too travel.;)
Clive.
Lancaster spotted passing East Keal, E. Lincs 5-11pm…
I saw it coming in the very far distance from the Wash and had time to pull up on the roadside to see it past..:)
It lives locally but a while now since I last spotted it…..
Clive.
Hello Scott,
In days gone by the aerodrome Bedford CF minibus would be ready at Butlins to take you to the old aerodrome for a pleasure flight in an Auster….up to Skegness Clocktower..South along the seafront or for a fraction more North up the coastline…..
The aerodrome was at first operated by Butlins…from June 1948.? Later during the 1950s? Skegness Air Taxi Service Ltd became the operators…
Was Clacton also a Butlins aerodrome.?
The Skegness (Ingoldmells) aerodrome site that I refer to featured in a google map image that I posted via a link higher up the thread.. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Ingoldmells,+Skegness,+Lincolnshire+PE25,+United+Kingdom&layer=&ie=UTF8&sll=53.098145,-2.443696&sspn=9.055978,19.775391&t=k&om=0&z=16&ll=53.184989,0.340426&spn=0.004436,0.016694&iwloc=addr
This can be compared with the 1980s photos posted up in the last few days by Dave Welch.
There was an earlier, 1930s, Skegness (Winthorpe) aerodrome…it was further towards Skegness on the West of the Roman Bank near the Royal Oak public house I think.
A photo features on page 27 of Wings Over Lincolnshire..a 1994 book by Peter Green, Mike Hodgson, Bill Taylor published by Midland Publishing Ltd.
Aviation is still served in the Skegness area by the current strip at the Water Leisure Park which is off Walls Lane…opposite the Southern end of the Butlins complex. http://www.skegnesswaterleisurepark.co.uk/index.htm
Have a good time at Butlins…;)
Clive.
