DC3 spotted this lunchtime 1-05pm heading just South of West…over Gunby, East Lincs….
I was looking at it into a very bright sky but I believe it had invasion? stripes on the rear fuselage…
….any ideas as to which “Dakota” was out this way today…??
Thank you,
Clive.
Hello “HeadZup” and “Lincoln”,
Cue Skegness thread reappearance. http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=16121&highlight=skegness 😉
It was my local Aerodrome….
I should add that my Mum and my Brother went up first to “test the water”…they reckoned it was great…so I chanced a go myself:)
We couldn’t persuade Dad to have a go…he had memories of Dak’ and Valetta flights out Egypt way.
I sort of gave it up a few years ago..wallet and reality check:rolleyes:…and reasons that may be apparent in the Skeggie thread perhaps also.:(…my last two flights, to date, being Stubton to Netherthorpe in G-BMUD and return in G-OTOW (now G-AROC)….
….but I can’t help thinking those Thruster 600 types that frequent the overhead at home here of an evening look to go rather well.??:) 😉
All the best,
Clive.
Auster J1N Alpha at Skegness…sadly did not record which one..but it could have been G-AHSO, G-AJEI or G-AHAL…
Clive.
MJ627 spotted heading East over Spilsby 5-23pm and returning West 5-34pm today..:)
Clive.
MJ627 about today passing my works location of Gunby E.Lincs heading West at 12-33pm, 2-19pm, 3-19pm…:) 🙂 🙂
Then…on my way home, 4-42pm, whilst traveling West along the Partney bypass…I happened to glance left and see some lazy smokey jet exhaust trails of a large 4 jet heading in a Coningsby direction ….sadly not close enough to see what it was…;) 😉 🙂
Clive.
5-56pm…MJ627 has just flown over Spilsby, E.Lincs…performing a series of barrel rolls as he headed away NE…:) 🙂
…about again overhead 7-05pm 🙂 🙂
Clive.
Thank you “Groundcrew” & “Sadsack” for the info’ on the Spitfire/Typhoon/Lancaster…..
I found a photo on the link below..
http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafcms/mediafiles/2912AC37_1143_EC82_2E548747B6705A6A.jpg
After a study of the photo I can confirm it was taken all but overhead my works location…having identified the chicken sheds that are in the background as those at Monksthorpe…the port wing of the Spitfire is masking the line of the main runway at former RAF Spilsby. The LCC salt dump is just visible near the pitot.
Now….beneath the fluffy white cloud, lower centre, thankfully obscured from view is Me looking excitedly skywards.;)
Meanwhile, just right of the Typhoons left canard mounting….is where I am sat typing this:confused: 😉
Shame my works is not in view…..as we had some lovely stripes in the lawns and the gravel raked just nice:) 😉
Clive.
You weren’t looking hard enough, the Lancaster was out a couple of times today.
I was looking, always have an eye on the sky, and listening…. I can usually hear such things miles away.;) ..cept when driving a mower. ..
That suddenly reminds me of my days driving a noisey mower in Horncastle back when Vulcans were tankers out of C’by…could hear them climbing out over noisey mower and through my ear defenders;)
..and further…have never seen any info or photos of a sight we had over Gunby last year..week up to RIAT I seem to recall.?..Lancaster motoring along…being trailed by Spitfire and Bae Typhoon… The Typhoon and Spitfire breaking left/right…reforming and repeat…:)
any thoughts on this..???
And I must add I do also enjoy the T67 Fireflys that turn over the gardens regularly… 🙂
Clive:)
Today..Dakota spotted at 2-47 pm over my works at Gunby, E.Lincs..and in the general area and out to the coast for some while…perhaps on air test.??
Clive.
Spotted..this afternoon whilst we were garden visiting at East Keal, E.Lincs…..Spitfire MJ627 out at play just South of E.Keal…3pm.:)
Clive.
Spotted…
In a left hand turn, from the West and returning West, around Spilsby E.Lincs today at 1-46pm Spitfire MJ627.:)
Clive.
Hello Fly380,
Thank you for adding a few more reminiscences of Skegness Aerodrome etc..
It is amazing how this thread has gone quiet and then leapt back into life again several times now since my first post back in Sept’ 2003 😮 😉
Not so many Vulcans to avoid these days;) …but in the last week a couple of wind turbines have sprouted up at Croft:eek:
Thank you again for posting on…:)
All the best,
Clive.
East Kirkby Spitfire T09 around Spilsby E. Lincs 2-44pm today.:) 🙂
Tuesday 11-14am….Chipmunk…RAF red/white training colours…over Gunby E.Lincs heading just East of South…
Hello,
Thank you Simon, AgCat, Gary, T21…for your additions to this long running and regularly resurected thread.
Simon,
I seem to recall a magazine article at the time ref the PFA rally awards….was it G-AJEI that was a winner ??
..and I seem to recall C172 G-BCPK getting a mention too. Sadly, when I last saw PK lurking in the hangar, sans prop etc before it got up and flew from Skeggy, its condition was a little more tired.!!
I flew once with Ken Harness…it must have been early 1990s out of Manby in either G-AJEI or G-AHSO when “SkegAir” operated pleasure flying at one of the Manby car/4×4 orientated events. We went out to the coast then had a fly through Kens farm strip N. of Louth.
I seem to think the Harnesses once operated a black and white C172 G-ROOK.??
With ref to crop spraying…as a young lad I use to keep a keen eye out for the White/Red striped Renault 4s racing down the farm roads behind our house…they would hail the imminent arrival of a Pawnee..!!
Gary,
Thank you for your update on the Auster whereabouts.
After my original post on this thread I did notice the change of ownership of AJEI come up…and I have a photo of EI cribbed from the forum.! that graces my pc webshots screensaver from time to time…climbing out from Breighton I think.??
Pleased to read that EI is fit and well and regularly to be found in Lincolnshire skies…and AL too
The update on AHSO is good to see too…it would have been the last Auster that I flew in..I got into a bit of a habit of turning up at Skeggy and a bit of cash saw us on a flight somewhere …more often C150 but occasionally if available it would be Auster…I think that told the sad tale of pleasure flying at the time…it had gone very quiet…and hence the Auster was available rather than running to the Clocktower and back where historically it would normally be..! If only it could have all lasted a couple more years and then perhaps marketed as a Classic flying experience.??
I did have a quiet pipe dream to take one of the Austers to a few more places..on one of my ad hoc vists to Skeg’…but this had to remain a dream ..not that my spare cash from gardeners wages would have taken us too far.!!.and not for much longer either…although I did once mastermind a round trip with 150 G-AZLH and pilot Peter Wilkes from Skegness to Dover docks and back via Shipdham…I just wanted to fly a bit futher afield and the RadioShip Ross Revenge had just gone into Dover docks so that made the excuse…and that’s another story altogether.
I wonder..do you have any update on G-AHCK..???
Thank you again for posting onto this thread… and keeping Skeggy and Auster memories to the fore…
All the best,
Clive.
