Thanks Philo for the info……Yes, I knew whose it would be but when you hear or see something it is interesting to know just where it is going too etc…….a couple of years ago it was doing a run in the night heading East over Spilsby then returning at about 8-45am the next morning…..that time it was regular as clockwork for a full fortnight…….this trip Tuesday seems to be a one off……as I did not hear it this morning…….of course I could have been too fast asleep.!! Think not !!……if some big pistons had come by I would have been awake and at the window like shot..!!
And thanks Roger for posting the picture of G-APSA ……hope you get your DC6 flight soon…..
All the best,
Clive.
Thanks for the info……..I could have answered my own question if only I had my copy of Flypast …..!!
I haven’t and there’in is a saga !!
For the Lanc…..some Eve Trackway was needed to get to the Eastern runway section…….but no doubt it was a tad easier with the Spit.
Clive.
I heard the Spitfire displaying the other Saturday at East Kirkby and saw it fleetingly prior to its display…….I live out to the East of EK.
It sounded to be winding up real well…..
Of course being so near I should attend more I know….. but its not always that easy……work to be done…..
I’m curious to know which runway the Spitfire uses……Can it find its way to the Eastern runway section……..or does it use the “Square”……..??
Clive.
And it landed “home” just a few minutes short of 9pm……up this way it was getting quite dark by then……
Clive.
Thank you Moggy…….I suspect you may well be right…..
But ….where might they have been From and To…..??
I checked their Website and it did not show a public display for that day…..I am not registered these days for Notams so couldn’t check there for possible venues …..
Thanks again,
Clive.
Did anybody get to see the Hurricane/Harrier formation out Stamford,Grimsthorpe,Bourne, Cottesmore way …2-00pm ish time today ??
The Red Arrows appearing from behind the crowd was a definite memory of my airshow visiting days……I used to sit on the car roof….(top of windscreen post , carefully so as not to dint the roof and incur the wrath of Dad for damaging the Allegro !!)…..
I knew the routine…..and watched for them skulking round the back…..loads of folk didn’t……!!
The commentry…..build up …..”Presenting the RAF display team…..The Red Arrrows” …….Whoosh !!
Anyway ……somehow I don’t visit shows these days…..prefer aircraft to come to me !!
Todays unexpected……This pm a Yak (or similar ??, not my best subject !!)…….It came from the North turned just East of my Works (Gunby, East Lincs)….it grumbled by heading West before turning SW, general direction of Coningsby.
Sorry my Yak-ish identification is not good but I enjoyed seeing it anyway !!
Clive.
ATCO,
So it’s not done these days !!….. how come the Antarctic Survey Otters went thru Waddo ??!!…….perhaps we are talking different types of fields….. not quite a Vulcan though !!
More thoughts……I was at Stubton Park a few years ago………an airfield run for a year by a now sadly late pilot friend of mine, Peter.
Peter was out banner towing and his wife Jane was in the control office…….quiet day not many movements……then the radio burst into life……”Stubton Park,Stubton Park….Red Arrows”
They were requesting pass thru the ATZ en route Cranwell. Jane calmly told them “Clear through ….no known traffic”……and they did…!!
” Red Arrows clear of your field ….to Cranwell……”
Only then did it sink in……She exclaimed…..
“I’ve just spoken to the Red Arrows”…..!!
Clive.
Then there was a day a couple of years ago……not unlike today, blue sky right up, little hazy…….radial engine noise……B25 orbiting high over Spilsby and out to the coast…….joined by Airliner and continued to orbit for a good while …….phone call from friend out towards coast……he was seeing the same thing…..TFC B25 being used as camera platform for Airline Commercial ??
Nothing rare over yet today, live in hope !!…….only USAF transports x lots …..as is norm these days !!
Clive…..
The posting with ref’ to Diamond Lil has jogged a few more grey cells….
Being in the right place at right time to see an aircraft by chance is always better than attending a show …..????
Several years ago …..could be 20 or more ??…..I was out towards the Lincolnshire Coast at Mumby…..It was September time I think…..I spotted an aircraft approaching……low and slow and unfamiliar shape……Casa 352 in German markings…..never did find which or where from or to etc……it slowy rattled away North and was visible for ages it seemed…….years later I read in a mag that one got as far as Newcastle and put in with oil problems ??….does that narrow it down a bit ??
Then I was lucky enough to see the Bristol Freighter that I suspect was being ferried down to Duxford …..again can’t just place how many years ago……it appeared low level heading South from over Spilsby Lincs passing directly aver the house here………all just by chance ……unfamiliar sound …..and ….LOOK AT THAT !!
And going back to school days …….I was gazzing out the window …..but trying not to let it be known to the French Teacher……different jet …….Sea Vixen…..seemingly approaching Coningsby……it was difficult to attract attention of my ATC Cadet friend, but I think he got to see it as well…..never explained that one either as it was at a time when Sea Vixens where mighty rare ??
And it wasn’t last year by the way !!…..else I’ve aged fast !!
Another memory …..I seem to end on sad ones ……Creasoting garden shed….sound of Merlins from the East….Bae Mosquito into Waddington for re-fuel……again a few years ago now… and the last time I saw the wonderful machine.
I’m sure there are more to tell…..I will think on !!
Yes, more recent …..Fouga Magister……in light blue , nose light on very low level…..across the garden at work …while I was in conference with my Boss !!….who fortunately knows my aeroplane leanings !!
Out of Coningsby after re-fuel and home…..
All for now,
Clive.
Well one or two things spring to mind……..the first posting reminded me of a couple of years ago I was sat in the volunteer acomodation at work with a group of volunteer workers after a days work……I was recounting a story of the previous year at that time about seeing the whole BBMF fly by down to Skegness and return with a Hawk flying above, below etc etc…..My story was halted by a distant drone …..into sight came a Hercules with all the BBMF Spits in line abreast behind……I was down the stairs and outside in 2 leaps…..Hercules with back ramp open ….and I assume the next years brochure in preparation ?? I have seen the odd photo…..they must have taken loads ??….one with my Big House/Garden works location East of Coningsby in the background would be nice to see ……
I tried recounting the story the next year to will on a similar event ….but only the odd F3 passed by !!
A few years back I was woken in the early hours by a loud turbo prop roar over the house……that’s what I realised it was when I staggered to the South window and the next one roared over head………looking South towards Boston all I could see was a mass of aircraft lights ……..Hercules x at least 12 !!…..low level heading North……to return a couple of hours later…..never have found where or what it was all about but it was repeated a year later but not quite overhead………Time elapsed from outbound to return sugested a trip to Otterburn or similar and back perhaps ??
I must add the F111 sequence at Queens Jubilee Revue of RAF in 1977……..afterburner and fuel jettison……was unexpected and new to me then !!
And more …….!!
Just landed at the old Skegness Aerodrome with Instructor when the source of the slick, muffled R/T was explained……sudden Jag’ fly thru……!!
Similar a few years later landing at Gamston ……I recognised a callsign to be the Fouga Magister out of East Mids…..My Pilot friend did not seem worried but I was getting a bit jittery as I reckoned it was catching us up a bit fast like..!!
We landed and vacated the runway at the first oppurtunity and it went past……..low and fast or what……and away !!
A few more instances spring to mind inc’ the sad demise of XM600….which I was sure would fly on by despite the obvious fire….. but it decided to go 45 degrees nose down…….not good ……but thankfully all crew out and safe and no harm done on ground only big hole in field !!
Apologies for the last one being not so positive but it was “unexpected” during a Games Lesson at School back in 1977 I reckon ??
All for now,
Regards,
Clive.
Thanks Fluffy for the confirmation that it would have been the two seater that I saw……..
I sort of knew it was a two seater but told myself that it couldn’t be !!
Earlier in the day a BBMF Chipmunk had flown a similar routing towards Skegness.
Once the Spit’ had returned West towards Coningsby it could be heard manoeuvring with a bit more verve…..(when it flew over my location it was well throttled back)…..It did not sound as far away as Coningsby …..possibly West of Spilsby/ East Kirkby area ??
Anyway, pleased to be in the right place at right time to see it overfly…..
Any thoughts on the identity of the Spitfire rebuild mentioned ??
Regards,
Clive.
Interesting that MJ627 has been at Coningsby.
Trawling around the net I found photos of a previous visit it made taken on 17th May 2002.
It may have been the Spit I saw on 20-2-03 flying out towards Skegness and return…..It did not pass full overhead but I did make out invasion stripes and thought two seater…..but then told myself …..unlikely !!……
Thanks for the info…..
Regards,
Clive.
RE: Stefan Karwowski
I remember Stefan displaying Spitfire, Sea Fury, and Hunter for Spencer Flack at the International Air Fair that used to be held at Humberside, Kirmington….After being used to sedate Spitfire displays….did he put these aircraft through their paces !!
I’ve never heard Spit and Fury sound so impresive since…..
Magic Stuff !!
Sadly I remember this display too for another reason;…..
As the Fury departed Humberside that day after protracted discusion over it’s low oil pressure and a return to the field mooted….the cause was put down to a long hold on the ground…..having set off for home sadly the Fury only made it back as far as a potato field at Waddington !!
Aircraft can be replaced/rebuilt, within reason….
Pilots not so easy….
I was privileged to see 70/80s pilots and their displays…..
Clive.
RE: Home build G-MJZP
The Microlight is a MBA Tiger Cub 440
A similar machine hangs from the rafters in the Hanger at the Newark Notts. Aviation Museum.
