    Ways to improve UK airshows…
    #1: Ban French commentators..

Better idea! Go to French AF and Aeronavale airshows. No attempt to rip you off with inflated entrance prices and a very good show to boot.

This year in June the three Armée de L’Air airshows are at:
    BA125 Istres, 5/6th
    BA123 Orléans-Bricy, 19/20th
    BA103 Cambrai, 26/27th

Always good shows with variety. Cost next to nothing to enter and really good value for money compared to rip off UK shows. I’ll be going to Cambrai as it’s a fighter base. If you have a look at http://www.milavia.net/airshows/calendar/showdates-2010-europe.html you’ll be able to locate the relevant web sites.

Thanks for the help. I’ve a feeling that this is not going to be an easy one to research. I’m already a member of PPRune and have posted there.

Thanks Ant, I took that straight from a submission from a Luftwaffe EW Hansa pilot. I’ll assume that he meant a GR1.

Thank you very much for your input. I’ve been doing some work on the EF-111 of the 42 ECS out of Upper Heyford. They were involved but not as early as 1983.

Most airshows in the UK are private operators mainly, very little RAF participation now 🙁 mostly warbird owners.

In France the Armée de L’Air shows are organised by a charitable organisation FOSA (La Fondation des Oeuvres Sociales de l’Air.) in conjunction with the Minister of Defense and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. The profits go to support the work of the charity which deals principally with the civilian and military aviation communities.
I don’t know about the Netherlands, but I presume the state shoulders the cost of the RNAF principle airshow each year. Hence the free entry.

    Come to Europe.
Air shows in Europe have other advantages as well. Not only are they now more interesting, they are also cheaper. I drove from my home in France to Leeuwarden, Holland, last weekend. One of the best shows I’ve seen in spite of the weather; and it was FREE. Airshows in my native France are also relatively inexpensive. There are three Armée de L’Air shows per year where the price for adults is 10€ and for older youngsters, 5€. This is I think because they believe that the taxpayers have a right to see how their money is spent without having to pay a lot more money to do so!

Thanks, I know about the crash at Manston. F-84E 21st May, 1952.
I now have West Raynham, June 1950, F-80B and again in June, 1951, F-84E
I recall, as a mere lad going to see them at an air show near my home at Orford in Suffolk; so it must have been Bentwaters or Woodbridge.
It’s possible we did go further afield. This would have been mid to late 1950s.

That fits looking a my dads service record he was on HMS Eagle twice May 1952 to May 1953 and Feb 1957 to June 1959.

He must have been in the Med during the Lebanon and Jordan Crisis. Does anyone have any photos or memories of ‘Eagle’ during this period in the eastern Med.
