I’ve just realised I’ve reduced the photos too much. I’ll try again with a couple of others!

It was 50 years ago, ancient history. The protagonists are now in the 80s and what damage would they inflict upon the security interests of the country by discussing those events? If researchers made approaches through squadron associations they might even get a few replies.

Ancient history it may be; but, from what I can gather ,those who signed the official secrets act are expected to take the information to their graves. This is in stark contrast to the USA where details of all Early Cold War Overflights were made available in 2003 and, at the time of declassification, a symposium was held in Washington and many of the original participants took part. From that moment on all were free to discuss the flights and the part they had played.
I have had replies about 543 Squadron activities from Association members but they have been reluctant to talk about their more secret (at the time) flights. They cannot be blamed for this. It is the fault of the government of the day and the agencies responsible for the declassification.
Of course the USA does have a Freedom of Information Act!

    Thanks David,
I have visited the site. Very interesting! But, difficult though it might prove to be, I’m trying to find some first hand testimony.

There were also a number of German airframes at RAE Orfordness in the early 1950s. I used to go there occasionally with my father who worked there; and have a vivid picture in my mind of the ‘dump’. Where they went I don’t know…………perhaps to Farnborough?

🙂 The photos are better than you are giving credit for and are a piece of history. They look very graceful sleek aircraft.

They are indeed and thank you very much for posting them.

BTW, what was the problem with Olds’ putting this formation together? I seem to remember the commentator at the time mentioning that he was off to SE Asia soon after.

In his autobiography Olds states the reasons for the performance, for which he didn’t get permission, were to get him off the promotion list for General. See attached.
It worked and he got chewed out. He was sent to Shaw and, two months later he was off to the 8th TFW at Ubon.

If you get the chance read the memoirs. They are worth it.

I was at that show and have some poor quality 35mm slides and some 8mm movie footage somewhere.

I will have a look through my collection but don’t hold out too many hopes of finding anything usable.

    Thanks,
That would certainly be great if you managed to come across some. Will you put some here if you find them?

I rather thought we had a surfeit of Spitfires. In fact I’m surprised there’s anything more to write or say!

    Tom,
I hope you don’t mind my pushing in with another 81st FBW F-84 casualty. Does anyone have any gen on this?

The 91st was based at Bentwaters but would have used Woodbridge if it was more convenient. There is a photo in Graham Haynes book on RAF Bentwaters and Woodbridge of 52-7105 on page 73. Perhaps if Graham sees this post he will upload the photo.

The F-84F in question, I think was s/n 52-7105 ? ,if so, then it served with the 91TFS,81TFW .
It ,in fact, had the full U.S.AIR FORCE nose title .
However, I suspect it had at first served with the 20th because some of their aircraft moved over to the 81st ,because the 20th only had them for about a year before the F-100 came along.
In 1957 the USAF would have had full nose titles because the change from the early nose buzz numbers took place around 1955.

Thanks for the input so far folks. But I am going to confine myself to the two RAF units which would include the Syrian visit, but not the aircraft in Syrian service.
If I expand too much within the word space permitted I think I’ll not do sufficient justice to the subject.

I’d agree with the above listings with the following corrections:

The Sabre is in fact a Sabre Dog.

    B-29 is a B-50

What a great pic, it’s a “live” aviation museum.

Sorry I’m a bit late with this! It’s a KB-50J of the 420th Refueling Squadron which was based at Sculthorpe.
