One of it at the Gathering of Eagles in 1994, with Mark Hanna and Robin Olds. The latter (among many, many other things) was probably the first USAF pilot to fly ‘178:

And the same day (though you’d never think it, by the weather!), Archie Nogle with ‘178. Archie was the last military pilot to fly ‘178, with the California ANG.

lets hope the relevant authorities agree, surely they will do something this time round as im confident with the right people involved this aircraft and F/S Eric Williams can be found.
It looks like there were a good number of the right people involved first, second, third (ad infinitum almost) time round, but it just took one or two people with unkown agendas to derail it all.
So fingers crossed it gets done finally because (a) because we have a moral obligation to F/S Williams and his family and (b) because it’s important to defeat those who don’t understand the importance of (a).
Duly signed!
You have to admire that TIGHAR lot though: they’re always on the verge of something that never happens or launching an expedition to investigate a smudge on some new piece of photographic ‘proof’, and despite the fact that we know it’s just an elaborate means of having a nice Pacific holiday every so often, we (I) still make the mistake of reading the latest ‘developments’, even though there aren’t any!!!
And despite having absolutely no evidence (or likelihood thereof), they’ve managed to keep this story in the headlines and many people who should know better (including me!) still waste their time commenting on it!!
Sabre dismantled and ready to go in a box to the USA…

sob, sniff etc.
RAF Museum?
RAF Museum would be a great start: they should have photos of aircraft from the units/stations that where your father was stationed. They’ll do scans of each for a very modest fee, and you’ll get some great photos, rather than the more run-of-the-mill stuff you’d find on the good old Net!
Couple more. You can click on each to make larger.

Try RAF Archives then? Or more likely, RAF PMA at Innsworth. Should be able to help any next-of-kin.
Sabrejet, this aircraft has a good deal of original parts. I know because i built some of it !

Glad to hear it! 🙂
Is anyone aware the ball park figure for the purchase of a flying Spitfire at moment ?? I know some will be higher (confirmed kills, battle honours etc) some lower (low back etc) than other but rough figure- Is the quoted 2 Million ‘about right’?
SM969 is quoted a £1,450,000 on platinum fighters – Not saying its ‘that one’ but that is the negotiation point for a low back flyer
Probably depends on whether it’s a replica, like so many are these days, or one which contains at least a modicum of the aircraft it purports to be. Thus, “confirmed kills” don’t really apply to many of these replicas, whatever their creators might like to tell one!
It’s still interesting to think that you can buy ten or more Spitfires for the price of a Ferrari 250 GTO!
Don’t forget the Argosies either! Also flown in and run on occasions. How I miss those Whistling ****! (or Flying Wheelbarrows for those of a gentler persuasion).
Similar field (B-17 recovery & flight) also near to Bere Regis in Dorset: I did have photos a while ago, but sadly lost in the Great Memory Stick FUBAR of 2012….
A few from ‘178’s illustrious past:
