Well it’s been hidden in plain sight all these years: it seems to have gone to the West Coast at one point, possibly to Chino. Sometime in the 1980s it ended up with Hov-Air at Frankenmuth Airport. Michigan; it was restored by Maurice Hovious and placed on display Military & Space Museum in Frankenmuth on 29 July 1998. It’s still there, though the museum aren’t aware of its identity.
Photo shows it being installed on its podium in July 1998.
Well it certainly looks like a sextant but I think it’s incomplete.
Have you tried the Squadron ORB? Available via download from The National Archive; downloads were/are free. Squadron code letters are often listed in the daily report annexes.
It’ll be nice to see it: must get up there soon.
Mikkel,
I’d suggest Dan Hagedorn or his son; not sure how to contact, but would suggest posting on WIX.
It looks sub-scale by the looks of the looks of the enlarged canopy/cockpit area. Was/is it a flyer?
“. In short, many or most of the people there come across as the type who get more of their information from TV and YouTube than from scholarly books (in other words, they know more about “Buffalo Joe” then Roger Freeman). Yes, I know that makes me sound like a snob :).”
Not snobbish at all: I find it to be about the same, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with expecting better of people. In fact I’d go further because my goal is always to try and cite primary sources rather than scholarly books. Nowadays there seems to be too much “I Googled it” type of response.
I’d missed that. But period, high-def photos that are new to me, are news whether they’re 80 years old or not. The “warbird” subject should not be restricted to present-day operation of warbirds or it would be a pretty thin crowd, with not much to talk about. WIX already has different areas for modern warbirds, models etc so I don’t see an issue. It also did a good job of replacing this forum when it died.
Not sure what would need that kind of control but certainly not a supercharger.#
Does look more radar/gun laying/fire control sort of stuff though.
Either we’re talking about a different site, or you’ve stumbled onto some errant threads. There have been some awesome early P-51 shots posted on there recently and the ever-insightful Al Casby F7U Cutlass thread is always worth a read.
Out of interest, which threads were involved in the bickering?
There’s a note on WIX saying that the site will be down in the next few days for updates.
Well that seems a strange way to behave, but at least it will be safe. Thanks for looking after it all these years (I saw it back in November 1980).
The PHP thing seems to be a common thread. WIX seems to be the only site that suffers.
I got the same PHP message but it’s working again now. It has been slow too.
So here we are. If the best we can do is, “what would you do?”, we have no hope. If better people than me can’t think of anything then I’d suggest we’re out of ammo. If I were an imaginative developer then maybe I’d have an idea.
But since I’m not, asking me is petulant and pointless.
