The location of the recovery was the Zugersee, Swizerland, not the Zuiderzee.
Which is strange because I’m sure the original post had the correct location!
Liked it, but it was a shame that someone didn’t vet the period (Battle of France or post-BoB) film, along with the modern (air-to-air of a P-51!).
I saw Nick Mason’s example run a few times. Not bad for 1.5 litres
But this takes the prize for sound quality.
I have stood this close on warm up on a couple of occasions. Nothing has come close, not even a Merlin on full chat, for sending hairs on the back of the neck tingling
Agreed: have stood around these cars a great deal and felt the noise. But for sheer noise, the Mazda 787B is the loudest, and to my mind the most impressive. I thought my hearing might have been damaged at Le Mans in 1991 and even more so from recent meetings with the beast. But it’s a great way to go deaf.
Well it was a shaky start – including a ‘doors open’ showing 8.00 on the ticket but actually occurring at 9.30, and a flying display which didn’t really get underway til 1.30…
However there was much to like about this display – OK the Vulcan/B-17 formation never materialised, but that’s no-one’s fault. The displays were imaginative and mixed in theme, and with a few tweaks I can see this show being a very pleasant day out on the calendar each year. I suspect it will be a lot quieter in future years, judging by the ‘post-Vulcan cancellation’ size of the crowd. But that’s a positive in my book.
The museum was also a big hit for me: mandatory to be open for future shows I hope! There were lots of interesting things to look at, big and small, and very approachable, friendly and helpful staff.
So to the ‘tweaks’:
1. PLEASE publicise a bit more on the website! I knew beforehand roughly what to expect, but there was no indication of when anything would start! Folks we spoke to had come from Cornwall and arrived for 8am, expecting to get in and have a much-needed coffee: they then faced an hour-and-a-half wait to get in, though no-one really seemed to know when the gates would in fact open!
2. Catering! More needed. I can’t vouch for the quality because I looked at the queues and gave up.
3. The PA needs to extend all the way down the crowd line: the talented Mr Hiscock was on the microphone, but I could only hear him when I ventured along to check out the queues for the food & drink! Still, I guess it meant that you could be informed while you were waiting.
But overall a lot to be proud of I think: I shall return!
Many thanks, your link gives me the answer, – Goodwood Revival, and it probably outdid all the noise of the cars!
You’ve obviously never heard the BRM V16 then!
Really no idea. The whole thing is not very well done though at least I do have tickets, which is more than some, by all accounts. I think the Vulcan/B-17 will be the main (only) draw for most. I’m aiming to turn up about 9 and twiddle my thumbs for maybe 8 hours….
All I can find is the Vulcan supposedly on at about 5pm! Strangely silent on the website, which doesn’t bode well.
We will of course all be checking your spelling and grammar in your forthcoming posts 😉 (joke)
Ill be on me best behavior. 😉
Anyone know more on this show? Timings, display start etc? The website is pretty thin on detail!
How about getting back on topic?
Agreed!
With apologies for continuing the thread drift but I agree, Merlin. But I also agree with Paul and do not accept the need to poke fun at those whose posts are grammatically sloppy. Lack of capital letters and punctuation simply makes reading and comprehension difficult, so I usually don’t bother to read them.
Agreed. However I think it’s worthwhile trying to maintain standards. In general, like you, I also tend to ignore poorly-written posts on any forum. Since the primary purpose of a forum is the transmission of information, it’s implicit that bad English and incorrect use of grammar can only hinder that process.
Going one step further and using the Media’s coverage of recent events as an example (this thread tackling that very issue by the way), I associate poor grammar and spelling with dodgy or worthless information.
Agree strange thing to do. But if fairness little of the work carried out by the MB Meteors is directly linked to UK MOD. It is mostly used for company product testing.
Interesting thought, considering the sale of Coventry based aircraft could their Meteor T7 be of interest to Martin Baker, even if only as a source of engines and spares ?
Eh? The other way round surely?!!
Potato po-tah-to. :eagerness:
I agree with this one. Sneaking onto an active airfield to gain entry (forced?) to an aircraft you have no right being on-board, purely so you can post photographs online for Internet bragging rights? Whole different ballgame from the naughty field. :highly_amused:
Yep. Disgraceful. But we’ve all done it eh?
:eagerness:
I notice in the North Weald diary thread that one of the DC4s is being dismantled!!! So what is happening too it? Is she going to a new home or being scrapped? Would be a shame to loose another classic!!!
I asked this question a few times and got no reply: I suspect the ‘dismantled’ bit is BS in that case. And what does, ‘dismantled…. for a film that never took off’ even mean? – this makes no sense at all.
Sad to see if they are being ‘scrapped’. Must be a home for at least one somewhere in the UK?
Morgan & Shacklady and Bruce Robertson’s Harleyford book. It would take something to better either.
