Already being dismantled and ready to go according to posts elsewhere. Great news!

I applaud the opportunity for the original to exist alongside the replica. I hope the owner of the replica might be able to buy the original so that the two could be kept together.

I also hope this heralds the start of similar arrangements in future, though I worry that it’s too late for the original Spitfires, P-51s which begat the various replicas of those. Still, let’s hope that this is a turning point for a warbird industry which has ridden roughshod over our collective aviation heritage.

More of the same please and no more destruction!

You have to remember that this piddles on TIGHAR’s annual vacation fund. He’s bound to be throwing a tantrum. But if it really is Amelia and Fred then it will make him a laughing stock. He’d be better off acting graciously than behaving like a spoilt child.

I dearly wish that Amelia and Fred can be found. But for the sake of taste and respect, I also hope that TIGHAR and its kind have nothing to do with it.

Roy that’s very kind of you: I got no reply from Pen & Sword.

I have seen some: same style of name board & taken at Wright Patterson. I think they may be in the Graham White R-4360 book.

Sally B went circuitously from factory to Nashville on 30 June 1945 for mods; from there direct to Wright Field on 12 November 1945 until 1950.

I’m not sure about the team but I did see a reference elsewhere saying the image was mid-fifties, which is nearly a decade out.

Is anyone able to provide a status regarding XH558 vis-a-vis a possible move (without any political statements)? I’ve seen talk of it ‘definitely’ moving, which seems naive, given that “scrap and bury on site” is an option, no matter how daft it sounds. In other words, nothing is ‘definite’ until it happens. I’ve dismantled and reassembled aircraft ranging in size from Meteor to C-130, so I know what can be done, notwithstanding the availability of manpower, resources, cash and an airframe that’s designed to be taken apart and reassembled.

So sensibly the options would seem to be either ‘dismantling’ (as far as possible to allow rebuild elsewhere) or scrapping and hopefully saving some big bits. Incidentally, somehow ‘dismantling’ has started to be used for aircraft which are obviously being scrapped, so can we use terminology that won’t confuse the issue?

I used to be excited by these news items. Now I just assume that another artefact will be destroyed so that its identity can be stolen. One day it will be different but it will be too late for many.

Have you tried Internet Archive? There are some on there too.

Spitfire Mk.V, for those who don’t do smug.
