Douglas DC-3 NC33644 showed up at Goodwood yesterday.
Photo a bit low res due to being taken with phone.
The Royal Navy Staggerwing showed up at Goodwood during lunch and stayed for a few hours before departing.
Mustang & Hurricane turned up at Goodwood this afternoon.

Given the relatively small amount of potentially flight worthy structure in that Stuka I tend to agree with Sabrejet. I think I would rather see a conservation of those parts with a new centre section etc fabricated and have it as a static exhibit given the rarity of Stukas. By all means use the parts as patterns for a new build in a similar to the Flugwerk FW190s but please don’t destroy an important artifact to get to the relatively small percentage of useable items.
I might be wrong about the amount of useable parts but given it’s been sat in a lake for a considerable time I can’t image too much could be reused.
I used to think it a shame the Hendon Halifax never got fully restored but when I saw it again a few years ago it struck me that it made a poignant exhibit showing how something as big and powerful can be reduced to a bit of wreckage by war. Sat there a relic amongst all the well restored and maintained exhibits added to the effect.
Anyway, The Stuka is not mine so they are entitled to do what they want 🙁
Judging by the word “Handstarten” on the hinged flap I would say that this is the access flap where the starting/winding handle for an inertial starter goes into the engine compartment. The shape of the top of the panel in the middle “motorkap best1” suggests this is a panel that sits behind the front engine cowling(s) and that the cowlings are circular in shape. Not sure how easy it would be to access the engines on a DO 217 for this type of starting though.
Looking on Google such a panel exists just forward of the leading edge on a DO 217. Not sure of it’s practicallity for starting all the way up there though.
Lots of Spitfire action out of Goodwood since the weather improved. Several twin Spitfire formations heading over this week with lucky punters on board. Terribly distracting when you are off work trying to get the decorating done. The Harvard has been about as well. We nipped into the airfield on the way back from picking up supplies at Homebase to see if anything was going on and found a fair few historic aircraft out and about. Here are some pictures. Not the best as on the phone but hope they get the atmosphere across.
Was in traffic in Tangmere behind the low loader carrying Gnat XR571 to Tangmere Military Aviation Museum this afternoon whilst giving junior a driving lesson. Does that count as spotted?
Here’s a pic of the Ex Gary Numan Harvard taking off from Goodwood a week or so ago. It’s been a fairly regular sight this year. As usual, not much sign of the Spitfires out of Goodwood over the winter.
Looks like a still from a 1930s sci fi film to me.
Signed and shared.
Not bad going. Back in the last century Flypast reckoned on a figure of 147 examples left when they did a similar survey. That would have been about the late 80’s to early 90’s.
I have a stack of back issues I was going to bin. Think I’ll hold on to them now. I got issue 2 of the new format at the weekend. Hhmm, still a somewhat diluted version of previous issues. I’m still holding out hope that this is all the effects of a slow news day caused by Covid though. If contributors are isolating due to Omicron then that would explain a lot.
I was equally aghast at the new format. I put it down to a possible drop off in news due to a lingering affect of Covid restrictions and/or financial impact on various projects. Time will tell. I hope this isn’t an attempt to “Broaden the appeal” as we have seen elsewhere.
Probably much easier, cheaper and quicker to rebuild it as it was originally built than converting to the airliner configuration.
Very impressive amount of progress over the last few years. Nice to see another type back from extinction.
Harvard out of Goodwood yesterday, the first for a while. I could only see the silhouette so I was not sure if it was the US Navy marked one that gives rides or the private one.
Good to see & hear it either way.
