You should take into account that it had two fairly successful sister ships.
“War in a Stringbag” by Charles Lamb was a good one. The bit with the bike lashed to the struts was amusing.
“Flight of the Mew Gull” & “Sigh for a Merlin” both by Alex Henshaw are classics.
Others,
“Tulmult in the Clouds” By James Goodson
“Sagittarius Rising” by Cecil Lewis

Be aware that some of the Russian sites have been known to post pictures of any unfortunate crew that may have been found still with their aircraft.:(
What are the dimensions of it ? Scaling off a 1/72 model I make it well over 3 metre wide. I imagine this is a deterrent to some.
Here is a link with some pics for comparison.

Having edited thousands of photos in photoshop, built models & faffed about with CGI I reckon the photos are real. However I’ve seen then on the ‘net sometime ago so I wouldn’t like to guess when they were taken.
I have seen a picture of the Italian SM79 in the desert before it was recovered & it was reminiscent of these P40 pictures.
Most of the fabric had gone, which makes up a fair portion of the fuselage, though the visible metal surfaces appeared bare after probably having been given a good grit blasting with sand.
WRT the clock missing, if it is a wind up one, could it have been removed as a navigational aid ? i.e. time of day & sun position giving an idea of where north is in the event of the pilot having no functioning compass & deciding to walk back to friendly lines. He probably wouldn’t fancy doing it in the middle of the day.
Getting back to the original topic, you have to consider what the Capt was being told to do by his ops people if he had contacted them for advice. Still a bit mean though, unless someone thought it was to set an example. Ultimately I would have thought it would have a more negative publicity outcome.
As to the choice issue, I do feel I’m being made to feel like an inconsiderate member of society, worthy of an ASBO for having done what is one of the most natural things in the world to do.
I do have friends/colleagues who have no children & respect their choice. We all co exist peacefully (ish) together. But I do sometimes understand how the smokers at work feel when they are banished to the smoking area in the carpark to indulge in their “filthy” habit.
Us parents don’t just go on holiday with children on A/C. I lived and worked in Germany where I met my childrens’ mother at my place of employment. My first son was born in Germany. We all now live in the UK. We have taken the children (now 5, 6 & 8) on an aircraft to visit their relatives in Germany several times. The eldest came over the first few times between the age of 8 months and 16 months with no problem.
It would be far crueller to subject them to a cramped 12 hour car journey than a 1 1/2 hour flight. We only just get into the “are we there yet ?” phase with the plane.
I never had any more trouble with them on an A/C than in the car. It may be because they have been bought up with aviation books, pictures, dvds etc around them that A/C aren’t so alien to them. The only thing they don’t like is the ear popping, or lack of it during climb/descent.
When I was younger I used to dread being near little ones on flights whether holiday or business. Now I have three of my own my views area lot different. I tend to have the sympathetic “been there, been through that” feeling. Now I would try to help out if possible.
I’m getting a bit fed up with people telling me having children is “a lifestyle choice”. We had this over on Pistonheads where people were complaining about those with children getting the parent spaces nearer the supermarket. At least those miserably b*ggers will die out as they have no offspring.
Excellent job, especially in the 100th anniversary year of Sopwith. There used to be a large photo (about 15 ft wide) of Dolphins under production in the Kingston Polytechnic engineering library that was housed in the old Canbury Park factory where they were produced.

Living 1/2 mile south of Chichester I have Tangmere & Westhampnett within a 3 mile radius providing prangs more than you can shake a stick at.
There used to be an excellent website listing all the local incidents but it appears to have disappeared. “http://www.fshurricane.net” or something similar.
Having looked at the geography of the situation on Google Maps, has Gatwick Airport been approached as a possible temporary refuge for the larger airframes if the worst happens. It doesn’t look that far to move them. I am aware how naive that suggestion maybe but I thought I’d make it anyway, just in case.
