    Hi WYSWYG,

I was there over the summer of 1991. I used to work in the same office as Les Merritt for my Industrial training year in 88-89. He introduced me to the club over that period.

OOh, don’t see a “normal” cub as the tug often. We did use a Super Cub when I was at Parham Gliding Club, plus the ubiquitous Piper Pawnee tug. There was also a Super Cub used for towing on a two week course I went on at The Gliding Centre, Shennington. I felt the Super Cub with it’s larger engine still looked under powered.

Anyone in the world can tell you that American english is correct english since it is spoken without an accent. The english that is spoken by most Europeans sounds like american english and not british english.

It IS spoken with an accent if you come from England or europe matey. I’m sorry, but I have to agree with the French who object to having their language ba5tardised with “americanisms”. The advantage the French have is that the incorrect usage of words is more obvious. Just because a large portion of the planet uses American English doesn’t mean it is correct English, just as some regional dialects in England are not correct English. The reason that a lot of Europeans speak English with an American accent is that a large portion of the media is American based. The deployment of US forces in Europe means additional exposure to the accent. An interesting point is that a large number of asians with whom Britain is connected via it’s colonial past speak with as English accent.

A better solution would be to refer to American English as speaking “American”.

I come from England, I am English, my mother tongue is English, It is called English because of where it comes from, just as I am. I resent being told by someone that it is not the correct version.

Well, the simple answer is to define “American” as a separate language which uses math.
I’m English & I speak English (with a bit of Gummidge) & it’s maths. I don’t have anything against the Americans, but if they want a separate language, fair enough, just don’t pass it off as English.
Still, it’s not restricted to English, I heard (urban myth probably) about a Spaniard in my industry who was told he spoke very good Spanish for a European !

Whilst we are on the subject,

Now.. all you Northern English types, about the pronunciation of my nearest home city, Bath. It is of course pronounced, as any local Gummidge knows, Barth…. which is obviously correct.

Thanks for those Mmitch. The Dragonfly is rather gorgeous. What’s the difference between a Rapide & a Dragonfly ? The cabin on the Dragonfly seems a bit smaller.

Maybe it’s to do with the “fluids”. No, I haven’t been watching too much Dr Strangelove. If the a/c is in long term storage could it be that any lubricants/hydraulics or inhibiting fluids place less pressure on one part of a system when the a/c is level than if allowed to collect at one end when it has it’s tail on the ground.

A more likely explaination is that if you look at the a/c around it in the photo they are all tricycle undercarriaged, i.e. “On the level”. Maybe they feel putting it on display this way makes for a better comparison. Doesn’t explain the lanc though…..

Anyway, I quite like it. I was expecting to see it stuck up a pole from the thread title.

ooohhh.. a Rockwell (Aero) Commander, now I haven’t seen many of those.

Does Bob Hoover still do his “Engine Off” displays in one ? I heard he had won his fight with the FAA over his medical but that was the last I heard.
