When I finished, my trousers were able to stand erect with no help from me. My flight cap was not recognizable as tan chino color, it was mostly black.

Is this meaning you didn’t wash them for all that time?

I would find relief using the bomb bay

I suppose you used bomb-bay only for big need. Probably it wouldn’t be useful for small one due wind draft. For small need did you have some kind of tubes such boys in P-47 for example?

Mr. Horowitz it was quite a long flight. I hope you had some kind of auto-pilot on your big bird (and toillete or WC)

    😉 😀

Bigmal can you add something else on the matter? Can you find anything familiar in this SAAF Beaufighter list?

Tnx Mr. Horowitz for additional info. That helps me find some connections with your mission that day and losses from your unit which occurred over ex-Yugoslav soil.

On the January 7th, 1944 wasn’t lost any bomber but two “little friends” P-38 wasn’t so lucky. First was from 71st FS/1st FG flown by Major Hanes Horace during escort to Weiner Neustadt. He was shot-down by Bf 109s, b/o south of the city Maribor (Slovenia) and RTD to Italy.
Second P-38 lost on that day from 94th FS/1st FG flown by Lt. Meredith was hit by flak and crash-landed somewhere in Yugoslavia.

Among that two B-17 from your 348th BS/99th BG was reported to be lost over Croatia. First one crashed near Koprivnica 16.7.1944 during mission to Vienna due mechanical failure. That was B-17G-35-VE serial 42-97909 flown by pilot Richard George (1st mission). All 10 crewmembers evaded .
Second B-17G-85-BO serial 43-38418 named ‘Glittering Gal’ was lost 20.3.1945. After mission to Vienna, they was returning over Austro-Yugoslav border and hit by flak on 18.000 ft. Engines 3 & 4 set on fire, crew b/o, a/c exploded in mid air over Krizevci. All ten crewmembers including pilot Richard Urban was POW by Ustachi (local Axis forces).

If you have anything to add I would be very grateful but tnx anyway.

    All the best

    Mr. Horowitz,

Thank you for answering although I hoped little bit more information than I get. Your obvious luck was that you never become familiar with Vis Island. Also I suppose you do not remember any fighter encounters over Yugoslavia since it was secondary battlefield for the Allied and Axis forces since 1944. Most of losses in area happened due flak activity.

I believe mission to Maribor (Slovenia) which you mentioned most probably happened on November 7th, 1944. On that day two B-17G-50-DL from 346th BS and 347th BS of 99th BG reported to be lost in the area. First one 44-6408 was shot down most probably by flak over Maribor, while second 44-6430 was hit by flak and exploded in midair over Slovenske Gorice. Third B-17G-50-DL (44-6263) from 353th BS/301st BG crashed near Krapina (Croatia). If you can confirm that date from your Flight Book it would be very nice.

Also I could bring you other B-17 losses over ex-Yu soil if you say to me number of BS you was enlisted.

    Best regards
    JeT

P.S. Only lost B-17G-30-DL (42-38089) in the area from 2nd BG/49th BS happened on 16.6.1944. After mission to Vienna pilot Shelby Vaughn lost two engines and crashed in Djurdjevac area (Croatia). That was their 38 mission and all ten crewmembers evaded.

If the weather is poor, I suppose a diversion to Vis in Croatia is out of the question. 😉 🙂

Of course 🙂 The grape field on Vis Island where the emergency airstrip was constructed, was converted back to its former use after the 2nd World War.

So you can land, but not take off so soon again 😀

    😎

P.S. Mark are you going to Malta too?

    Sir,

After mentioning the Alps I wonder did you have any bomb-runs over Yugoslavia and did you ever fly over that territory? Do you have some knowledge or memories about Vis Island? Maybe you will remember something if you check following links
