    Pilots Licence

This is my second post but thought you might like it. My great aunts pilots licence, ground engineers licence and logbook, unfortunately WW2 put an end to her aviation career. First entry in logbook is 8/11/36 for 20 min in DH60 VH-UPU.

    Elsham Wolds

In the book ‘No moon tonight’ when the radio operator calls their home base of RAF Elsham Wolds it is ‘Hazel Control’. Hazel could be its callsign.

QLD Spitty, are you on Commonwealth land? The tank museum at Puckapunyal has an impressive array of real weapons on display so it shouldn’t be any different for you.

    Hi C6
This is what I believe is the story behind these 2 Corsairs, if I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me. A squadron of Corsairs took off from the nearby Quon Hill airstrip to escort a long range bombing raid, during the mission they were involved in a firefight with some Japanese aircraft and consequently became low on fuel – running out just before reaching home. The sunken aircraft is only about 3 or 4 metres deep but is unlikely to be recovered as it brings in money to the locals when they take tourists like me out there. The one on the surface was very complete until a few years ago when the main fuselage was recovered in exchange for a very small tractor for the local village, only the wings, centre section and engine remain. There are quite a few wrecks around Vanuatu but once again the tourist value of them is high so will probably not be recovered. While I was there we also went to Million Dollar Point which was quite extraordinary in itself, lots of aircraft engines, bulldozers, trucks, cranes and other war paraphenalia, half of the nearby town consists of Quonset huts from when it was the huge US staging base known as ‘Buttons’. I have attached a photo of Quon Hill airstrip.

I am afraid that I cannot offer any technical explanation or higher wisdom but if you are willing to delve into popular fiction I do know that in some of the Biggles books written in the 1930’s and set in WW1 Capt Johns mentions German bombers as having a distinct sound due to unsynchronised engines. This has always intrigued me as I never understood what was meant by it.

Thanks for the replies and PM

Why ? – damm things were disabled to stop them drooping.

That is probably why I cannot get my one to wind down! I thought if I had some idea of what it looked like I may have been able to ‘encourage’ it a little.

A friend of mine who lives in Apollo Bay saw two army Huey’s flying over his house today in an easterly direction. Can anyone shed some light as to why they are still flying?
    Thanks Paul

    Jaguar?

Does anyone know if any museum, group, organisation or individual is planning to keep a ‘live’ Jaguar as a ground runner?

I really like the A-7 and was trying to import a cockpit section of one however it was like pulling teeth trying to get anything out of the US so opted for the Jaguar instead. It turned out well really because the Corsair would not have fitted into the garage. Therefore my only A-7 memento is this panel.

In the Melbourne suburb of Alamein you will find Sunderland, Halifax, Mitchell, Anson, Wirraway, Catalina, Ventura, Liberator, Hudson, Beaufort and Mustang. There is also (non aviation I know) Bardia, Tobruk, Derna, Benghazi, Crete, Wewak, Buna, Gona, Lae, Tarakan, Markham, Ambon, Huon, Morotai and of course Alamein Avenue.

    Hello All
As posted earlier I would like to meet up with a group of like minded people but personally can’t open any doors to interesting things (except my garage) so would have to leave it up to someone else to plan. Early next year when Nostalgair is in town would be ideal.

Dave – you are still more than welcome to come around and see the Jag
