The Viking came first after the Wellington – then the Valetta and finally the Varsity, so the Valetta could arguably be said to be a militarised(?) Viking!
So which buildings have recently been demolished at Drem then Drem? Its years since I went there but I recall an impressive collection of Bellman hangars in reasonable condition….are they still extant?
Also was Darlingfield a WW2 site or an earlier or later civil landing ground? Not sure I’ve heard of this one before.
AT – Isn’t Faygate near Horsham in Sussex?
I reckon the Miles Falcon could even be Hairyplane’s aeroplane, G-AEEG – any idea where or when this pic was taken?
Thanks SYD – I hope so too!
Visiting Dunsfold yesterday, I saw that there is now only one DC6 there but was unable to get close enough to identify which one it is – can anyone confirm the reg’n?
I recall seeing several stacked up Harvards visible over the wall of the Sandhuirst yard in the early 1980s – I guess a contemporary Wrecks & Relics records when the last one left.
So who has a spare set of Viking or Valetta wings then – I believe the last ones were scrapped after the arson attack on the Valetta at NEAM in Sunderland a few years ago?
Thanks for that Bradburger – I nearly said ‘or by Aces High’ but I have heard both parties claiming ownership since it got there, so maybe it is actually jointly owned! It soon gained ‘Dunsfold Park’ titles on one side last year but these have since been painted out.
No – I think you will find that it is owned by Dunsfold Park/The Rutland Group and is regularly hired out for filming etc.
Have you tried obtaining some of the books previously published on UK airfields including the relevant ‘Action Stations’ volume (I think the series is now being revised and updated) as well as asking the Yorkshire Air Museum and the UK’s Airfield Research Group?
I have never been there myself and, according to the UK Control Towers website, the tower (latterly v derelict I think) has now been demolished.
Perhaps its been mentioned before, but does anyone happen to know what this impressive new building cost and what size it is?
You could also try asking the helpful team at the British Airways Museum and Archive at Heathrow – they ought to know the answer. They have a good website too.
Personally I’d rather have seen the old RAF Officers Mess preserved instead of a hotel…….especially as this was one of the first such buildings in the country (possibly the first).
He should still be living at Hawkinge, Kent – the Kent Battle of Britain Museum may have an address. He was also a local councillor last time I met him.
