    Ridiculous statement

Please be so kind as to enlighten us to the meaning of that “chant” at the end of all your posts ?
Whatever it means, it’s starting to piss me off.

    RE: Hendon free entry

Apparently the MOD will be funding Hendon out of their normal allocated funds.
And in my book that means the MOD will now have even more influence over the RAFM than they did before, don’t know if it is a bad thing or not though ????????????

    RE: New Year project………

    Hi Neilly.

Thanks very much for the offer of scale drawings, but I already have loads of them for many types.
While perfect (sometimes)for small scale models, the trouble is with most of them is that they don’t show enough detail of the detail stuff like trim tabs, actuators, hinges etc to enable a full-scale model to be built, which is what I am actually intending.

I will have a look at the site you suggested though and see if they have anything useful for me.

You’re right about the lack of decoration on some rudders, but I’ve found a few which should make interesting subjects, especially the German types with their huge scoreboards and medal ribbons.

Thanks again…and A Happy New Year to you and everyone else also !
    Cheers

    RE: New Year project………

A LEVEL MATHS !….blimey, I never even passed my O Level maths !

Still, I’ve learnt a lot more since then so building a few rudders shouldn’t tax my brain too much !

My wife doesn’t know (yet) Steve…..lol!

Hmmm, the size of them is quite daunting, but I’ve got high ceilings so I think I’ll be OK……as long as I don’t get a hankering for a B17 or B29 rudder………..

    Now there’s a thought ?

I had already considered asking the likes of TFC, but I thought I’d ask around a bit first to see if anyone else can come up with what I need, but I’m keeping them in mind.

    Cheers

    RE: Thunder city colours

If there’s apparent problems (from some people) about what colours someone paints there own personal property, then just wait untill i get my hands on my Spitfire !

Anyone remember the Revell 1/32 scale Spitfire Mk I, 610 Sqn DW-K ?

Well I had one of those kits for Christmas when I was seven, and while I would not say I was terrible at model making at that age, you can appreciate what it looked like after I stuck it all together AND painted it in gloss green, brown and blue paint, AND stuck the transfers on, sort of, all before tea time !!!!!!!!!!!!
And I still remember the look of despair that my parents gave me when I brought it down from my bedroom to show them !

I’ve always wanted to paint a Spitfire, if only for a week, exactly as I painted my very first Spitfire model………that should make certain faces go rather blue with rage (or green with nausea)when I lob into Duxford for Flying Legends !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t believe I would dare do that ?
Indiana Tony knows I’m mad enough ?
Watch this space……..or rather the pages of Flypast !

Ps – Since that time my model making skills have improved massively, you will be relieved to hear I’m sure !

    RE: Reputation of the Lancaster

I had a feeling this was all going to end in tears.

They were both superb aircraft, and we are extemely fortunate to have had both of them when we needed them most.

It is however extremely unfortunate that we no longer have a flying Halifax to fly as a true Brother In Arms with our Lancaster; hopefully it can be remedied one day.

It doesn’t matter anymore which was the best, they were both very good at what they were best at, so it is best left at that really, anything else is totally pointless now.
Besides, many young men were killed horribly in both types, and it is only when you read the harrowing stories from the men involved that you realise how wonderful both these types were – and at exactly the same time – how horrible they were as well.

This kind of bulls**t bias towards one type or another has got the preservation movement nowhere.
We all know that if certain people had not been biased in the past, then we would now still have several Halifaxes, and Stirlings, and the rest, and we would no doubt have an example of each flying along with the Lancs, or at least under active restoration to fly by someone, and Hendon’s Halifax would have been fully restored years ago no matter how much it cost.
Also the Panton brothers would most likely have their Halifax as a monument to their lost brother Christopher, to go along-side their Lancaster.

One of my (very many !) dreams is to own and fly a Lancaster one day, but I would always feel that I was missing out on something…….so a Halifax would have to be aquired somehow to build up a collection of heavy bombers, but then I would have to consider the other types like the Stirling, Lincoln, Flying Fortress, Liberator, Superfortress etc.
It may be a pie in the sky dream, but all these types mean exactly the same to me, none is more important than another.
Huge numbers of young men died in all of them, and as far as real unbiased history is concerned, we could never have done it without any of them.
And to argue now about which one was better, is somehow, IMHO, cheating the men who fought and very many times died and helped win the war for us in the others.
It’s almost as if it is somehow considered to be a lesser event to have fought and died and won the war in a Halifax, rather than a Lancaster, and vice versa.
Of course very similar to the Spitfire V Hurricane, or the Lightning V Mustang arguments……..know what I mean ?

Let’s just be very thankful for the designers who brought us (alphabetical order) The Halifax and The Lancaster just when we needed them, and the crews who were willing to put their very lives on the line for us, in whatever type.

    Truce ?

    RE: BuNo.123168

Thanks for that Rob…….that’s just about the kind of story I was thinking of myself !

So if I was to buy (!) the real remains of 122719 from Tom Reilly and want to get it restored, registered and flying………what serial number could I legally give it?
Aren’t the FAA going to be a wee bit “confused” if I went to them with my Corsair and told them it was 122719 which is already flying of course…..at least it is as far as they are concerned !

I presume I would have to adopt yet another ID for it….perhaps 123168 ?

I agree that it is more important that the Corsair is actually flying, but it would also be nice if some people could take more care with the history of these machines, especially if it happens to have an interesting history, perhaps with an Ace having flown it maybe.

I note what you say about the owner having better things to do than change the serial back to 123168, and I (reluctantly !) agree……but can this be legally done anyway ?

    RE: Catalina

Regarding two Cats flying on the show curcuit if Plane Sailing bought another, I don’t think there is enough interest on the show curcuit for two.
If Plane Sailing do get another, which I think is doubtful, then there will be little point trying to compete with “Killer Cat” on the curcuit, they will have to do other stuff to keep it flying.

There’s barely enough work for much rarer aircraft like ARCO’s Blenheim, and even many of the Spitfires……….if it wasn’t for them being owned by millionaires (most of them anyway) who don’t need airshow revenues so much, the vast majority of these aircraft would disappear to the US very quickly indeed.

I think the ex Green Peace Cat is going to be sold when “Killer Cat” gets up again……….but if I was them, I would sell both of their Cats, and buy one of the few which is still in stock condition with all it’s turrets intact and the original spec engines and fin etc………..this I think would be much more attractive to enthusiasts and hopefully the airshow operators.

Interestingly, the ex Green Peace Cat is to be painted up as a USN “Black Cat” for a forthcoming History Channel programme………and they haven’t even finished painting it up in RAF colours yet !
Anyone know anymore on this ?

    RE: BuNo.123168

    That’s interesting Rob.

I got the info from the WW Directory, and a website http://www.warbirds-online.com

123168 is not listed in that book (not my copy anyway), so 122179 must have adopted the ID of 123168 after it was rebuilt by Pete Thelen before sale to WOGB in 88…..?……or has 122179 adopted 123168 since it went back to the US, for “paperwork” reasons ?…….or was it really 123168 all along, and for “paperwork” reasons while under rebuild by Pete Thelen, it had to adopt the ID of the crashed 122179………know what I mean Rob ?

Hhmmmmmmm yet another dodgy ID….can’t get enough of them can we ?

    Gone back to the USA

BuNo 122179 N179PT, last owned by WOGB, sold to Jim Read of Indiana two or three years ago, now repainted in more authentic markings……and NO, I never even saw it, let alone saw it fly !

    RE: Re-enactors, Actors and medals

I have no real problem with actors wearing medals…if it’s part of the costume then that’s how it should be.

I do remember seeing a TV programme a few years ago, where re-enactors were on a trip to France (I think ?), with their military vehicles etc.

One of the Brits spotted a French man wearing medals on his uniform, and him and his mates then went over to the Frenchy to give him a good brow-beating and told him to get them off because he was obviously not entitled to them…..needless to say he took them off, because he didn’t want to be beaten up by 3 or 4 big burly brits.

Odd thing was though….all the Brits were in WWII uniforms which they were also not entitled to wear…………and if I remember rightly 1 or 2 of them also had medal ribbons on.

I have never really had an opinion on this matter….and I’m not sure if I do now.

    RE: Duxfords new arrivals!

But then it would only end up outside rotting anyway, unless Duxford got one and stuck it in a hanger, but there’s no guarantee of that ever happening….so it’s probably better they stay where they are until the UK museums get their arses in gear and are able to look further ahead than next year.
