The film was also released as “Spitfire” , possibly to the American market, ,its even edited (censored ) in places!; Henry Royce fails to remember that the Merlin was named after a bird of prey , and opts for the more predictable “mythical wizard” Didn’t Michell ,visit a clinic in Viena ,Austria after the reocurrance of the Cancer ,only to be told that it was inoperable; whilst not exactly Germany,it was a sort of annex ,if I remember correctly!!

By all means send me the data plate , as I need one for the mkIX I am currently building; anyone who has worked on Spitfires will atest that none of the rivet holes will line up from one A/C to another, and so the sugestion that the actual structure will be incorporated into another is optimistic to say the least; whilst the frames may go again ,if they are in potentially “airworthy condition then they should form the basis of the original A/C .As for the £1.5 million ,is that the asking price for TB382 ,or a guide to what it might cost to restore? if the former , that would be my argument for keeping it together,as the possibility of self funding for the BBMF cannot be ruled out ,at some stage, if the latter, I would have thought given the almost limitless covered space the RAF has ,it could go into store indefinately, to be used for the same purpose . I’m gratefull to the BBMF for saving me a small fortune,as a tax payer but I do know something about what it actually spends on newly manufactured parts, and in terms of what you would save spares recovering from TB382 ,its a drop in the ocean ; the Lanc I believe is about to get 4 new spinners, and I know what they cost. Lastly, Despite a cheap jibe about “tax payers” ,it was not my intention to “ruffle your feathers”(another cheap pun) or denigrate yourself or anyone else working on the BBMF fleet ,but as you noted its my opinion . Sorry to the thread originator for an off topic ramble.

I personally think that to reduce a complete A/C to spares is wholly irresponsible, in this day and age almost every thing can be remanufactured, (certainly all fuselage and wing components) and to strip an A/C that was known to be TB382 ,if not provenanced as such , shows a lack of understanding, re preservation, and also financial concerns. I do realise that the BBMF are “beyond reproach” ,but it is this attitude that allows autocratic decision making to flourish.

If you put a ratchet strap over a painted surface (especially recent paint) it will rub away the surface in a suprisingly short time ,obviously it is worse if there is any movement ,but even on a solid mount it will still happen ; far better to securely fix the cockpit to either a trolley or cradle and strap that to the trailer ,or else fix it to the road trailer direct. The other maddening tendency is that ratchet straps completely drop off one end ,and then do nothing; so a belt and braces approach is my suggestion ,i.e use a trailer winch to secure longitudally (front to back!) And finally I’ll have you know its “mean and horrible” not the other way round ,as all of my ex friends will tell you.

My first flight was in a Jodel (I think) in 1986 from Andrewsfield ,it was an attempt to “exorcise the demons” as a good friend of mine was killed in a Chipmunk a couple of years earlier (I had the oportunity to fly that day as well, but declined due to pressures of work) Can’t remember if the A/C was tail or nose wheel but which ever it was, it got stuck in a pot hole, and even full power wouldn’t shift it,we both had to get out an push, although to my dismay we moved it so easy ,I think a child could have done it; it did make me slightly aprehensive ,although I wouldn’t say it put me off flying, as I’m thinking of having another go.

So when they used the phrase “he’s bought it ” is that a reference to buying the farm?

Isn’t it time we had another Spitfire thread?

The problem with this forum ,is those new members who seem to come from nowhere ,acting as though they’ve been doing it all there lives, and offering opinions and advice where neither are wanted or needed (don’t forget some forum members have been doing this for years) ;they don’t even have enough sense to know when they are butting in on a “private” chat between a bunch of mates (who probably were at school together if indeed they hadn’t met much earlier ) And worse still they have the supidity to open up discussion on subjects already covered a thousand times.

    B*gger, THATS ME isn’t it !!

David, how does one accomplish this “cut and paste” thingy; as you know I’m more of a spanner man than an IT’er (you can pm me for a definition of “IT” if you want!)

surely after a while nobody’s going to know who owns what, or is that the intention? presumably there must be an easier way to add to the list rather than type the whole thing out each time. (yes I know don’t call me surely!)
