Well I did say that I didn’t fully understand……. so why didn’t the AAIB (not the CAA) ask the pilot?
Not fully understanding the way that the CAA work, I am surprised that they didn’t ask the pilot why the aeroplane did what it did, as he was obviously in the best position ; in any event I’m glad his injuries were as light as they were (considering the angle of descent).
Those were the days…..
I don’t believe the engine number is recorded in relation to a specific A/C, they were changed as complete units at I think 100, 200, 500 hours progressively as the war continued the engine life was extended by RR.
To be fair, I did trim up some of the flapping metal work left from the original sectioning from the airframe, it was the worst job I’ve ever seen, (done I think by Hanningfield metals) the control columns were cut an ripped out leaving an 18″ hole on both sides! for years people had told me it featured in Red Dwarf, but I never caught a glimpse until after it had gone, it was used (briefly) for the interior shots of the Heinkel H111, featuring Rimmer in the “Smoke me a kipper” episode.
Just a footnote, the Wings museum, sold it on in about 2012-13 and the then owner did nothing really with it until 2019(and I should know as it was me) whereupon it was purchased by Shoot Aviation, for another go in the movie business!
Hi CD, I do vaguely remember the Mythbusters episode, and hazily recall that they came down in favour of your side of the discussion, but like everything I think the key to it is the wording, and it is impossible to match the belt and A/C in terms of thrust and speed! I was thinking (whilst writing the garbage), of an Aircraft carrier, in the Doolittle raid not turning into the wind to launch A/C, but turning downwind and making 30knotts, that would make interesting viewing!
Seems to me that a general lack of tolerance for other peoples opinions, may contribute to this current incarnation of the Flypast forum’s failure; it has to be said that many a forum has members that are non contributors, and just read it; isn’t that a bit like books, where a few people write them and many more read them?
I don’t know when Mk12 left, but before the current debacle, embroiled as he was in a bitter circular argument with the “head” moderator, (ironically that was a lack of tolerance of his opinion) he (Mk12) was a hugely important contributor to this forum, and is sorely missed.
Answering a question statement posed by someone, with maybe 10 posts in between the question / statement and the answer/ response , requires a quote facility, to avoid the obvious confusion.
As I recall the “head” moderator banned airshow pictures from the historic section, causing a mass exodus to the Plane talk forum.(latterly resolved) but now the problem seems to be an almost complete lack of photos on the threads, or else they are thumbnail size.
To sum up, there is no record of who is active on the forum, nothing to show you who is reading a thread, no counter to tell you how many people have viewed, no quote facility, and a lack of contributors alienated by Key, and some of Key’s representatives.
Hi Christer, tried to copy your reply, but that appears to be another thing that doesn’t work! just to say whilst I’m a big fan of Abba, I’m not familiar with that particular song….
On the subject of quote facility, who could forget the time our self styled “head” moderator removed it because we didn’t play nice; not everything in the past was better!
Hey CD, that old chestnut “aeroplane on a conveyor belt” has resurfaced on FB, and you’ll be pleased to know I was straight in there!
What I do find interesting, is that in the main, knowledge gained on the quick via giggle, (or some other search facility) is forgotten just as quickly!
That’s a shame but never the less understandable (although you may not read this, for obvious reasons)
I can only add my condolences, and reiterate what a great bloke he was, and he could count amongst his many talents, aviator and talented guitarist; blue skies Melv
I visit here every couple of months, honestly it isn’t any better, and I don’t think now after all this time it is going to be; maybe Key should note that the bulk of the forum activity is critical reviews of the forum functionality!
I well remember having an in depth discussion with Creaking Door (about 15 years ago) on the laws of physics acting upon an aeroplane; still don’t know who was right, those were the days……..
Tried UKAR which is a superb platform for the something like the Duxford diary (although this year there have been a few blank pages obviously) but was rather abruptly told to “STAY ON TOPIC” by an arse of a moderator for exchanging a few pleasantries with a fellow flypast forum vet; moderators have been the bane of this forum, in the past, and I have no intention of allowing that to continue anywhere, (one thing in favour of Facebook)
Might not be back on here this year, so Happy Christmas to you all, and stay safe.
Legends has in the past often been the same weekend as Silverstone, let’s just hope they both go ahead; great news for Sywell looking forward to seeing the place, )even though it’s now 140 miles away) part of me still hopes it can return to DX (not just because it’s nearer) but the place is still alive with history, not withstanding recent management attempts to cleanse the historical aspect from the other wise excellent corporate location.
Totally agree with the above post; shame really as I’ve been a member for nearly 15 years, (although in that time I’ve brought very little to the forum other than sarcasm, and irony)
