“remind us all why Scampton is a place of “national interest and importance”
You could say the same of Duxford, a brief cameo for another of your personal heroes; (Douglas Bader) and if it wasn’t for the movie stirring up interest ( sounds familiar) and bulldozing the M11 right through the site giving the place enviable access, who knows what might have happened to that particular redundant airfield.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen signs on the M11 saying use the parknride for Duxford, otherwise I don’t know where the idea might have come from; the whole point of parkanrides is that they aren’t anywhere near where you want to go………
As a former regular at Hendon, the only attraction was the aircraft, I hated that part of London (although as I hate London with a passion, and for a variety of reasons, that’s not saying a lot) and as an outsider I found the congestion charge confusing, and similarly the LEZ ( don’t that just sum up London)
I have said for a number of years in my humble (but none the less considered) opinion that the RAFM should move outside of the M25; parking at Hendon is extremely limited, and the train station quite a hike for the less than dedicated; Scampton is outside the M25, is available, and probably has a greater significance to the RAF than Hendon, everyone has heard of the Dambusters, and almost no one has heard of Claude Grahame White.
Whilst links to the site at Scampton maybe poor now, they were once at Duxford, and they have a parknride now (apparently)
. “Perhaps some folk best research the subject before commiting to the keyboard”
Actually I was misquoting a line from a particular film, “You could tell them I designed it, do you think that might help”? and as you suggest I have no special knowledge of public transport, (or interest)
Do you think if they made the buses run more frequently that might help?
Let’s face it it’s not needed at Hendon…….
I think in order for that to happen, restorers should be more honest, with regards to originality, (or not); instead of filling all the aviation magazines (including the online variations) with bullsh!t about how this or that was painstakingly restored; a friend of mine has a Spitfire, he reckons to have about 70% by weight, however it was totally destroyed, and I doubt one piece is usable.
“Pretty sure the press don’t read this forum. If they did, they might at least get some of their stories factually correct!”
Interestingly I’ve just looked at the forum members on line (btm front page) and we have a member; “dailymirror” I’m sure there’s no connection……..
This is truly sad news, a talented artist without doubt, and I’ll really miss his humour on this forum.
“Quite how a data plate survived to be rebuilt is beyone me”
As I always used to say “why didn’t they build the A/C out of the same metal they made the data plate from? as they all seemed to survive!
“Groups like this really help make Duxford the special place it is. Well done to all.”
Indeed they do, we hear a lot of complaints about reenactors on this forum, but for me it helps to create atmosphere; (something that the rows of corporate catering/hospitality trucks that obscure the flight line destroy) some of the reenactors were positioned to the back of these “things” and I think a case for covering them with camo netting, to hide them, and augment the reenactors displays could quite easily be made.
Indeed a true gent, always came over as a thoroughly decent chap, unless as I suspect you were in front of him, in a continental type during 1940!
I don’t know how far you need to go to turn one of these around but the video shows a smoke trail almost before it is airborne.
I looked at the other thread yesterday, but couldn’t make head nor tale of the links; why so many on board a test flight?
“Of course that didn’t stop the complaints on the Key aviation forum when the RAF Museum loaned them a Spitfire that was in storage (and doing no one much good”).
It’s nice to be remembered………….
