Ah, but will they be at……… actually I know the answer to that one, no.
Anyone got a spare trim wheel (either) for a $pitfire……. thought not!
Don’t get me started on the Viscount cockpit….
Shame its closed, I was a regular reader for a while, seems we have lost a good resource (even if you blinkered types think otherwise) it certainly introduced me to some photographic methods and how many different military airfields there used to be around the uk.
Even with blinkers on, I have managed to find two excellent photographic resources of disused airfields, one belongs to the originator of this thread, the other called “Control towers” run by Robert Truman hasn’t been updated for a few months, but there is a wealth of information on there also.
Regarding techniques, I usually point the camera at the subject matter, having first selected “auto” (and lifting one blinker up, for the view finder) then I press the button on the top, (works for me).
Regarding unauthorised access, I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, If there is a gate that is shut and a fence around it, the owner doesn’t want you in there, why can’t people respect that?
If there is no gate or fence, there is still the matter of crop damage, (criminal damage) which is an offence.
Many of these old derelict buildings are on a knife edge of destruction, as landowners, we are being told that we now need third party liability for people on our property (even those who shouldn’t be there), rather than pay that, many landowners will raze the buildings to the ground, removing the problem (and our heritage) in one go; why not make enquiries, and ask the owner.
What drivel, Joseph Smith and the team took the Spitfire to absolute perfection and was developed much further than the Mustang, the final variants are the pinacle of piston engine fighter design – one wonders though if Supermarine should have tried building the Spiteful / Seafang earlier, maybe in place of the final Spitfire marks.
Isn’t drivel, when someone is talking b0!!0cks, but doesn’t know it? I on the other hand know its b0!!0cks, but can’t stop myself….
Is there a bad looking Spitfire?
Personally I love them all 🙂
Yes, the one with laminar flow wings, different shape rudder, clam shell U/C doors, bubble canopy etc , was so far from the perfect shape, that was Mitchell’s original design, they gave it a different name….
“Mustang” (thats right isn’t it Chris?)
best looking means nothing else matters (i.e. form, fit, function, purpose), just looks….and that is in the eye of the beholder!
The Hunter F1 looks the best out of the Hunters, sleekest etc….but the most pants….goes for any other aircraft, hence increasing mk number tends to make it better!
Hey Tony, not sure you’ve grasped the subject matter of this one….
IT’S A SPITFIRE THREAD!!!
Mk v, with 4 blade prop; absolute perfection, later ones are too long, earlier ones too short (just).
what prop would go on a viscount?
The one holding my barn door open says; Dowty rotol type (c)r257/4-30-4/60 (give or take a dash and a slash)
I sold one on ebay a couple of years ago, from memory I think it made about £50-, so probably worth a go, rather than the £1.20 ea they will make in the scrap; and don’t forget, if you mention the word $pitfire, they will make even more!
HMS Vulture was selling his Sea Vixen, and thats really only a single seater!!, you could send him a PM.
Realistically, there’s not much chance of a single seater other than a Hunter, although there is always the possibility of a Harrier getting the chop,(might be worth talking to Jamie Everett, who often adve.rtises on Barnstormers)
You gotta be quite impressed with that, if only for the fact that it appears to be held together, without the benefit of a single rivet or bolt…..
Rolls Royce had a Griffon (mid engine) p51 in about ’42- ’43, a very nice looking plane; albeit only in the mock up stage.
WK198….
I chopped my way through the middle of a Buccaneer, with a hammer and chisel,; does that count?
