I think discretion was the better part of valour in the case of the desert spit, as he decided to go around after that last bounce; one of the Luftwaffe (probably a reenactor but you never really know) told me he had a mag out, and whether true or not I was very relieved to see him down next time round.

“We will not bother the forum with updates any more.”

I’d say the situation was unchanged then.

The really sad thing is that all of this, clouds the human aspect to the story, a sad and needless end to an obviously capable man.

The canopy release ball is mounted to the canopy itself, the cables run from that to the release pins, all of which goes with the canopy, when jettisoned,

I don’t think it’s future is bleak, but probably a reality check is needed on it’s value.

Hi Elliot, Martin Philips was knocking out frames a while ago , he may have a few left, Likewise Mr Adlam, also I believe the Boultbee group were/are producing a spitfire simulator, they maybe able to help; most of these non airworthy frames are made out of NS4 (5152?) perfectly strong enough to take it’s own weight! in fact it’s actually quite difficult to get “soft” aluminium these days as almost all of it is heat treated to T6 hardness

It seems to me that those who want wrecks left where they are, have much in common with those who opposed the removal of the steam rollers that were in kids playgrounds, or even the A1 Lightning, local landmarks and considered by the locals as “theirs”; history isn’t just the hulk of wreckage, but the story of both the machine and the men/women.

Year on year the local connection will become more distant, and eventually no one will remember what it was and why it is there; memorials get vandalised and plaques are stolen, but “sayeth a mans name, and he shall live forever”

What you can say in these enlightened times, is very little of the trinket size of items will go for scrap, and most will find their way to an appreciative collector

Indeed nice to see a less glamorous role displayed to the public.

I was told by a volunteer at Newark, that their Hastings was a veteran of the Berlin air lift; a fact I found all the more bizarre languishing outside as has been all these years.

If by “unlucky” you mean at the hands of the press then yes because it appears he crashed his Mustang twice at Legends, the first time in 2001 parachuting to safety on every occasion probably even the Woodchurch incident (Jonh Belushi in 1941 springs to mind)…….

Just out of interest, what night was it on? as I completely missed it first time round; was it a Sunday, as the sound of the pub calling would have completely drowned out the TV ………
