Power is nothing without control, what did it handle like?

Quoting from Bill Gunston’s book on Rolls Royce, “In late 1944 an RM.17SM Merlin was run at Derby for fifteen minutes at 36lb boost on 150-pn fuel with water injection, recording an output of 2640hp”.

What was the maximum power output of an Allison v1750?

The need in 1940 wasn’t for a Griffon, it was for a Merlin with an anti g carburettor, and cannons, it is very possible that a Griffon Spit (or Hurri) would have been too cumbersome to take on the early (and more agile) 109.

The two reasons that the Merlin was the engine of ww2 were, 1, its power output and 2, its reliability, especially at high boost.

You must spend all your time on E-Bay!:D Looks like a seat to me. Wonder what a Piston PROVERCE seat looks like?

Not sure, but I think a piston provenance, comes with full history and a letter of authentication.

A bit of a sweeping statement that; it has been said that the Merlin produced more power @ 30,000ft, than the Allison did on the runway (another sweeping statement!)

Not so fast Mr. Gowans. How do you know it wasn’t designed by a Germanic engineer to be exactly 330.2mm long?

    Very cunning, these Germanic engineers….:)

    Details, details ….

It can’t be of Germanic origin, because it is exactly 13″ long….

My answer was in reply to your question, “would you be able to tell which engine was in it”, not a comment on whether a particular A/C should be grounded.

Well if one belted down the crowd line would you be able to tell which engine was in it?

    Yes.

Xtango, please don’t think that my reply r.e the farm machinery was sneering or in anyway derogatory, it was merely adding another dimension (wanted or not) to the thread.

As Junk collector was involved in the recovery, he is feeling a little aggrieved, with regards to the way things turned out, possibly justified, possibly not; not for me to say.

As I understand it, the data plate doesn’t just save a few quid, it is the difference between a restoration, and a new build, and the latter requires type approval, and that needs very deep pockets.

Whilst it is true to say that nothing made in 1940 cannot be replicated, you have to see the invoices for some of these items to believe them, and no one has started manufacture of merlins yet, however the one thing that can’t be replicated is the history, the bravery and possibly the ingenuity, of those men with their backs to the wall.

From my time in the RAF Police in Germany in the eighties; any aircrew that refused to fly their Jaguars on a one-way trip with a bucket of instant sunshine attached, were judged to have LMF, and we were under orders to force them back into the cockpit or shoot them!
Alternatively, if the jockey got a bit keen and wanted to taxi before he was cleared by us, we had to threaten to shoot out one of the Jag’s tyres or, as a last resort, chuck our trusty Sterlings down an air intake….happy days…….. 😮 😀

The way sterlings were made, I doubt that they would have made much of a difference!
