Well there you go then, half the aviation community has owned it; no wonder it’s a bit rusty with all those sweaty hands on it!
Well done guys, must have been the pill box that done it!!
Looks like the one I sold on ebay last year, it didn’t have a fascinating history then, so perhaps that started with my ownership!
That would be fine;you can say what you like about the colour of a white man/dog, as long as you don’t insult his/her religion, or nationalistic honour (or take his/her bone away)
Looks like an early avon to me.
Thanks Mark 12. could well be. I remember reading somewhere it was a RR, but that may not have been correct then.
Either way, can anyone confirm what car Mitchell owned and if it is still around?
According to the biography written by Gordon Mitchell, RJ Mitchell had 3 Rolls Royce’s they being; 1928 20hp (GYL25), 1932 20/25hp,(GLR31) and a 1936 Bentley 3.5 litre (B87HM); I’m sure if they are extant the Rolls Royce owners club will know about it .
Is the word nigger not a corruption of the word niger, pertaining to the river niger and nigeria? that has always been my understanding, obviously it was slang for black, but thus far not much more than scots, brits, chinks, japs not even as bad as frogs, or krouts; how many people in the 1940’s had even seen black people ?(hopefully thats not offensive).
To me it shows the difference between now and then ,smoking was encouraged, as was drinking (and driving), women were ornaments, and a black dog was called blackie, jet, or nigger; Gibson obviously thought a great deal of his dog, the code word was chosen as a sign of success , and nobody laughed or tittered when it was mentioned, an age of innocence in many respects.
Thanks Graham, the side cowlings are original,I did have a pair that sold on ebay a few years ago,and were finally collected a few months ago! they went to P Earthey.
R.e the trailer, you probably have it worked out , but putting the plane on backwards will put the majority of the weight aft (note correct use of word) of the wheels, and drastically increase the likelyhood of trailer snake (not to be confused with trouser snake); I had a car trailer almost sideways on the M11 a good few years ago, not a good feeling!
Ok thanks; shouldn’t believe everything you read on this forum then!
Southampton Hall of aviation (as they were) have got the ideal trailer that they move their replica Spit on, the wings lay down each side of the fuselage, in specially made racks; worth getting in touch with them and getting a few pics/ measurements.
The funny thing is, once the remake comes out you’ll get nerds complaining about the tiniest details and how much better the original was.
Watching it again I’m reminded how simple editing, not changing the order of events, but better editing could improve it immensely as an entertainment. You need only watch Star Wars to see how that might be so.
And leaving it factually accurate….BTW I thought that Star Wars was edited whilst watching the Dambusters
I’m sure Lancs didn’t have guns in the wingtips!
Yes I noticed that too for the first time ;I’ve only been watching it for 40 years (not continuously you understand), but I thought that the two decoy A/C were flashing nav lights to get the “jerrys” attention.
Well it wasn’t nigger or digger, it was censor!
Mark12, yes I think outboard is more appropriate; although I didn’t want to give Graham the idea that just because it was Seafire, there was a need for outboards…
Just my two penneth, the early seafires folded aft of rib 7, I believe the later ones folded further out ,but even at rib 7 the span is over 10ft, and would require a police (or otherwise authorised) escort every time you take it out on the road.
As I am currently building the stub wings, I have settled on the join aft of rib 6 which comes in just under 10ft, but I do know of somebody who has set the join at rib 5.
