I guess it could be said that it wasn’t quite a lot of peoples fight, the South Africans, the Australians/New Zealanders, Canadians, all far enough away from the fight,(initially) that they could have stayed out of it, “cometh the hour cometh the man” I think sums it up.

Hey, I thought we all “agreed” that no item was ever damaged whilst in the care of a major museum, let alone in transit……..

On the subject of whingers and moaners who never achieve anything (other than maybe change) at the 60th anniversary of the Dams raid, I suggested to DX that they might have rolled the bomb/mine over to the Lanc (about 20 ft) and fixed the broken display, to at least pay lip service to the event; the answer was “didn’t have enough time” I pointed out that they’d had 60 years……

Yes agreed CD not suggesting this to be the cause; I do think that things go south real quick as a display pilot, as you are already close to the ground for display purposes; I would think a fairly natural reaction to loss of power, would be to push the throttle forward quickly, which often has a negative reaction in terms of stabilising power delivery.

Not a lot of thinking time, with an engine failure, and as said in the video clip a lot of information to process.

In my experience certain fuel issues show exactly the same symptoms as ignition (in this case mag) issues; apparently Merlins suffer from over greasing on the mags.

It looks a one point as if he has enough height to make it back ,but at the end the plane is sinking fast, and probably the best decision, to belly in the field; I wonder what effect a similar landing at DX itself would have on the events precedings and whether advice is to put them down off (air) field?

Or to put it another way “turns out it’s worth a fortune, so form an orderly queue with you cheque books at the ready”

From memory, accredited museums are required to offer said items to other likewise accredited museums, but are not required to endlessly pursue this, and can dispose of (sell or scrap) fairly easily as the items offered can be listed as misc rusty tubes etc.

In my experience of this, no other museums were forth coming and the items were indeed scrapped (the preferred option as opposed to selling, as once it’s gone it’s gone, and doesn’t keep doing the rounds causing embarrassment)

I love the bit in the video where the ground crew jump on the tail plane so the pilot can run the engine at high revs, not seen that before, but seems obvious really

“For reasons not recorded it failed” maybe the 4:1 reduction on the output shaft gave a slightly disappointing top speed!

If it is to be part of a re enactors display, then possibly not; see Spinal Tap for details………

A missed opportunity? if a mkV was fitted with mk V11 engine bearers and a mkV engine that would allow the fire wall to be extended forward (above the carry through spars) for a set of rudder pedals, also allowing the seating to be lowered.

I’ve seen this story pop in on the RAF Wethersfield page a few times, concensus of opinion is he was well versed in C130 operation; I’m surprised there is not a definitive time for the take off of the A/C but if he did indeed fly it in the dark, (single handed) then it’s a shame his abilities weren’t recognised before that unfortunate event, and channelled into something more positive.

Again I can’t see why the US would need to borrow a Lightning to shoot their aeroplane down, or why a Russian spy would need a C130; these were the days of microfilm after all…….

I haven’t been able to “notice the illegible Floyd” possibly because it is illegible, but I did notice “109” one the fuselage……..

It’s a good job I didn’t say I was underwhelmed with plane resurrection, (Nick) but the Hurricane episode challenged much of what I thought I knew, (which came via flypast magazine all those years ago) at the time it was hailed as being nothing more than a light restoration, but clearly that wasn’t the case; I also find it hard to watch the Mustang, but for very different reasons.

When you eventually fall out of love with a provider like Sky, everything you have on the “box” is lost; I also had a problem with the system, and the nice man on the phone said the only way to fix it was to delete all the recordings……it didn’t.

I have Piece of cake on the “box” but never looked at it; watched it on DVD the other night no breaks/ads just how it should be.

One of the best documentaries has to be a Spitfire story, I haven’t seen it for maybe a decade, but before that it was on nearly every week; there’s even a bloke on there who’s a dead ringer for one of our mods……..

Yes riding a bike does appear to be a prerequisite for an honours consideration; but a life well lived none the less.
