I gather from reading the above posts, that the next of kin of the 2 pilots have not yet been found or contacted.I agree that their wishes are paramount, and I suspect the MOD and the State of Maine have not actually contacted the families since the 1940s.
Perhaps there are forum members here suitably qualified to find the next of kin of either or both pilots to inform them that their loved ones remain entombed in their planes at the bottom of a lake, and should they wish funerals it is their entitlement to express that need. And of course to warn the families that these planes which are monuments to their loved ones have become tourist attractions.
I imagine that given the choice, both families would appreciate military funerals, the pilots themselves would given the choice probably also wish a funeral rather than to remain lost in the lake……..perhaps this forum can make a difference digging up living relatives here in the UK!
Fascinating thread everyone!
Yes indeed! What happened to her plane?
I also remember this excellent commercial and ate the sweets back in those days, but what I didnt realise until reading that it was from 1978, that it is actually a childhood memory:cool:
god i hope so! 🙁
seem to be mixed reports saying the pilot ejected ok, and then that the pilot didnt 🙁
If it was a 2 seater then there would possibly be 2 ejections
Hopefully the pilot and any co-pilot are alive and in good shape.
It is tragic to lose any plane in a crash, my thoughts are with the pilots, their families and friends in this distressing time 🙁
It looks like a good collection well worth a visit.
Its a shame that none of the RAF machines used in the emergency and not repatriated escaped the melting pot………
I saw that Twin Pin dozens of times 1973-75 when it was outside the National museum……..happy days as a child while my father worked over there
May i ask what you base that statement on?????? Have you carried out a survey of this airframe?? Are you qualified to make such statements??
No I am not especially qualified to make such statements.
Today NX611 is able to taxy and lift her tail from the runway safely without any problems , and looks lovely to boot, as well as drawing big crowds to every event on the calender.
However, as a reader on this forum the previously published comments about the wing spar being near the end of its fatigue life and all four engines being replaced by newly rebuilt examples already indicates that a very substantial amount of work and additional new material will be introduced (likely including rivits and skins).
`Thrown away´in this context doesnt mean put in the trash, it means permenantly removed from the airframe.
As I said before , the owners can do whatever they like with their property, and ´if it aint broke dont fix it´folks like myself will continue to chat on forums about what could or should or does happen……….. I am not of the fly it at any cost school unlike many other forum members, and there is plenty of space here at Key for us all to discuss this, but bottom line is its down to the Panton brothers to spend their money however they please.
It would indeed be wonderful news if 2 of these Merlins were for TA122, I would have to fly over to see it ground run ( I live in Denmark)
So much of the original airframe will have to be thrown away if NX611 is to be returned to the air under the CAA that it would be a substantially new & different NX611 after rebuild. The owners can do whatever they wish with NX611, its their right, however we should all be grateful for having experienced the real NX611 before some new millenium rebuild takes the place of a very original ex RAF & French airframe………its a shame Just Jane will not be allowed to carry on being the Just Jane she´s always been:rolleyes: and already fulfilling a wonderful role recreating the atomosphere of the airfield as it was in WW2
Its a movie/tv mockup – probably Star Wars although without colour I am not sure – positioned for shooting against sky/water background on a turntable
Even if the thread has gone, most of us read the posts and can remember the score.
We should all respect Key´s desire to avoid legal conflict with ebay and have the option of further discussion by pm.
And now everybody here knows that there is absolutely nothing to be gained from upsetting ebay, and potentially there is a big downside:dev2:

hmmmm interesting….no matter how accurate or not the film will be it doesnt alter the fact that Nigger and Gibson are probably the two most famous names to come out of ww2 (to the masses that is not just all the buffs).
Does Quid think only the buffs remember Hitler, Stalin, Churchill et al? More than half the people I know can tell you who Monty was but havent a clue about Gibson unless they are black & white movie buffs, which they are not.
Perhaps in the interests of historical accuracy and the minimal possibility of causing anybody offence, as well as giving the movie a big star, perhaps this forum should tweet Mr Fry and suggest that Samuel L Jackson should play Guy Gibson in the movie:D – this PC casting would certainly get more americans to view the movie! A suggestion which may appeal to his cousin Peter Jackson! And get David Frost spinning in his grave!
With the ebay seller being located in Hungary, chances are that the photo was locally sourced so a country near Hungary like Greece is a good bet
Biggles,Algy,Ginger et al. My school library had most of the books WE Johns had written – the WW1 stories didnt grab me at all but I liked the later stories.I still have at least one Biggles book I bought back then because it wasnt in the library….
The rounded top of the fin has to be MkIX or earlier. The roundel is interesting – a small size centre circle, colour which may or may not be red.if thats an RAF roundel then it looks like an early war shot, probably MkI or MkII but if thats a French or Italian roundel then it could be a MkIX postwar
