To reply to this threads original question, while the F-14 is an interesting idea, replacing one old, maintenance intensive, complex swing wing platform with another just wouldnt make any sense, especially for an ‘interim’ period. There was a case for a small buy/lease of say 24 SH’s. That would of been ok as they are available/affordable (especially if leased from the USN) and at least have longer legs than the currnet Hornets and later could of been bought outright for conversion to EA-18’s for dedicated SEAD, something the RAAF lacks (although i think the RAAF F-18’s are wired for HARM, can anyone confirm?)
However with the C-17 purchase, all the money is gone from the cookie jar so i think we can forget any interim fighter purchases. Besides the RAAF has put its (immediate) future in the F-18/P-3/JASSAM basket.
If that is the case then the Saudis are set on moving towards the Typhoon.
It was reported just a few months ago (Jane’s, AFM, etc.) that Saudi Arabia was in negotiations with the Eurofighter consortium to specifically replace the Tornados with orders for Typhoons.
Seems the Saudi Typhoon deal could have a couple of flow on effects, Typhoons to Morocco, F-5’s to Indonesia. I read in AFM that Morocco made an offer to supply surplus F-5’s to the TNI-AU, which makes sense now if the Tornado deal pans out.
While on the subject of AAC Defenders any opinions as to why the 3 new BN2T-4S use the AL.1 designation? My knowledge of BN-2’s (apart from flying in one here in oz in the ’70’s) isnt exactly comprehensive but aren’t the -4S models longer & more powerful than the original AL.1’s thus warranting a designation change? (AL.2?)
Because the initial 12 are for the Army but will be capable of operating from the Navy’s amphibs.
Daniel
I think that statement is at the heart of the matter. When the MRH-90 deal was announced i noted in the fine print that it was mentioned that the helo’s were capable of maritime ops. Hmmm i thought (call me a cynic) what a good way for the ADF to save money, retire the Sea Kings and claim the MRH-90’s can fill the role (which im sure they can but more than 12 are needed considering its meant to be an Army S-70 replacement as well). But given the MRH-90 in service date is a way off (with any additional purchases further away) and the near mutiny over continued Sea King ops, we may see a small buy (6-8?) of the MH-60’s for Navy utility/SAR roles with the heavier roles (amphib. assault etc) being handled by Army MRH-90’s.
Steve, re your point 3:
As part of the UAEAF order for new AS 350B-3’s, Eurocopter is taking back the UAEAF’s old AS 350B-3’s and selling them on to the RJAF
This quote from AFM magazine (May ’05).
Although after checking the RJAF order of battle on the scramble website (http://www.scramble.nl) which lists 5sq (the most likely unit) as still operating the Hughes 500 and makes no mention of Squirrel’s (the OOB is fairly up to date as it lists the RJAF’s recently delivered EC635’s). As to what all this means im not sure but thought it was worth posting!
I think the date of the article says it all….perhaps this was the Singaporean mindef’s “fallback plan” if the F-15/Rafale competition didnt work out? Anyway RSiAF’s F-16’s are pretty new and highly spec’ed so they dont need upgrading yet (there are a lot of other F-16’s out there that need a Block 60 upgrade before Singapore’s!)
waaaaahhhhhhh nobody ever asks me if I would like to go up for a flight (I’d even pay for lunch…) waaahhhhh
Couldnt have put it better myself rollo although as like to spot (sorry, avaition enthuse) military aircraft i think my chances are pretty slim! Although the RAAF has female pilots now, so maybe i might pick up a ride in a Herc…..
btw Trinny, next time im on your side of the world i will be be looking you up (and like rollo i’ll be a gentleman and buy lunch 😉 )
Seriously tho yours was a v nice gesture & i hope you weren’t discouraged by a few ‘grumpy old men’

Interesting scenario….assuming the Soviets didnt roll about 20 Guards Tank divisions through the place or pop the odd tac nuke (the gentle art of Russian persuasion…) the Czechs would need aircraft quickly (given the East German problem in your scenario) and aircraft that wouldnt be too hard to take into the inventory, so while the Mirage 2000 was probably the best non US/Soviet aircraft available (in 1986) im thinking it would cause logistics/maintenance (+ political) problems. So…..how about the Chinese? not exactly first rate equipment but available quickly, in quantity and pretty close to what the Czechs were operating already. Plus the fact the Chinese never miss an oppurtunity to fill a market vacated by the Russians 😉 Also the South Africans would be big on my shopping list (especially for anti tank stuff) as they have an effective home grown munitions industry, were still international pariahs in ’86 (so would sell to anyone) and knew what worked against warpac equipment (Angola etc).
Sorry i posted that twice guys, i dont think my views are twice as important as everyone elses! 😮
