RE: P-51D
It´s true that the aircraft at some point in time was denied its authentic swedish markings and had to fly with distorted crowns in the roundels. The crowns looked like flower pots.
At another point in time it even flew void of swedish markings all togeteher, and was painted in a scheme to highlight the sponsor, a nation wide grocery store. Their logotype was positioned in place of the roundels.
What´s funny is that the swedish national insignia isn´t protected by copyright, at least wasn´t at that time, so they didn´t have to ask permission in the first place ……
As a swede I´d appreciate if the aircraft remained in its swedish markings but, it´s the owners choice.
I´ve seen a picture of an ex Swedish Air Force P-51D in the U.S. with one side painted in its USAAF colors and the other in its SAF colors.
What´s Your opinion on that possibility?
My opinion is; one aircraft – one paint job, even if it means no more Mustang in swedish colors.

Christer

RE: Uncle KeithMac, ……
I knew You´d have something up Your sleeve and quick as always.
I must ask, since Your book is gone, is this from memory?
If it is, no teflon coating there!
Thanks,
Christer
RE: A bit of Technical Education.
I´m all ears (eyes)!
Christer
No Sadsack, I´m not sulking ……
…… I´m back today from a week of skiing in Austria, or rather off skiing since the weather sucked.
Well, did You get there (and back) and did You find out anything regarding the Lake Schwerin Dora-9?
Christer 🙂
Sometimes I wonder why I bother?
Well, I don´t know what You did to upset P9306 but, a simple thanks would have avoided upsetting me!
Sadsack, when You get there, ……
…… ask about the situation regarding the Lake Schwerin Dora-9.
Would be nice to hear some good news on that one!

RE: hello from berlin
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-03-02 AT 08:33 PM (GMT)]It´s located in Gatow, a suburb west of Berlin.
You don´t reach the museum from the front entrance.
You have to go around to the back.
There´s a gate in the perimeter fence and you go across the runway to get to the hangers.
I believe there´s a map on http://www.luftwaffenmuseum.de
Hope this helps,
Christer
Came to think of a good resource:
http://www.shellgeostar.com/share/
Enter Berlin as the starting point and Gatow as the end point.
When prompted choose Gatow with postal code 140.
Click full page map (or whatever it says) and You see that it´s not difficult to find.
You can also get a city map over Gatow and search for Gross Glienicker Weg. It´s a long one and when You consider turning back, don´t, it´s just around the corner when You get to a few summer houses (I guess that´s what it is).
RE: Caption competition
Whos idea was it to build a 3/4 scale?
RE: Why on earth……….?
I think that the BBMF (RAF) have leaned quite heavily on Rolls Royce to get that assistance. Today RR have no responsibility for any of the piston engines, at least not to my knowledge, since the designs are more than 20(?) years old.
A modification to the Griffon 58 would set them back to square one regarding application of liability laws. If something should happen, then the lawyers would come down on RR like a ton of bricks.
The question mark after 20 means that I don´t remember the exact legislation, Clinton did limit it from “for ever” to a specified number of years though.
So, if you want to fit the Griffon 58 you´ll have to accept the contraprops.
Thats just my 10 euro cents worth,
Christer
RE: I’m back!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-02-02 AT 01:13 PM (GMT)]Mr. Modification,
You´re really good at this.
The J35J Draken making a low flyby is not that impossible.
In the mid eighties there was a wacky display pilot who, if he had been american, would have been into rodeo. He had a motorcycle accident with head injuries which prompted the insertion of a steel plate to substitute pieces of scull ……
On one occasion he was returning to base from a display and made one last low flyby, for the benefit of the crowd or himself I don´t know. Maybe he flew twice as high as Your fake, riding on the air cushion at mach 0.95 and when he passed, the shock wave hit your chest like a sledge hammer. If this had occurred today he would have been severly reprimanded.
There is, however, one give away detail in the modded piccie. On top of the afterburner cone, behind the fin, the cover for the drag shute is missing indicating that the shute was deployed during the landing roll!
😉

RE: Request for Uncle Keithmac!
Hi KeithMac,
I´d like to start with a thanks for Your answer to my Centaurus question. I didn´t think that the situation is that serious.
I´ll also have a go on Your contraprop question and this is what I´ve learned about the Seafire 47:
Seen from the pilots seat the front propeller rotates counter clockwise and is the master to which pitch is applied from the pitch control unit and the pilots lever in the cockpit. Pitch is transferred to the rear propeller via a translation bearing. If this bearing fails the rear propeller goes into coarse pitch and will provide nothing but drag. The front propeller will have to do all the pulling against the will of the rear one and full power has to be used to maintain flying speed.
Is the rear propeller different to the front one in other respects? Maybe they differ in pitch range since the front one rotates the airflow against the rear one? Maybe the airfoils differ due to different angles of attack? I don´t really believe in the last one but maybe the first!?
As You probably have understood by now, when it comes to me the questions always outnumber the answers.
Regards,
Christer
RE: Uncle KeithMac, one for the weekend!
Well uncle KeithMac, now that You´re back I add this comment to bring my question to where it´s more likely that You´ll see it! 🙂

RE: For war movie fans…
Sadsack,
don´t go by the counter, it´s not reliable.
I´ve gone in and out on a few occasions to test and it never registers my visits!
BooHoo, I don´t excist 🙁
Smoking of inhibitor
I´ve seen one such picture taken by Jeremy Flack and it´s included in “SPITFIRE A Living Legend”.
The picture shows the late Nick Grace starting the Merlin 66 of ML407 / G-LFIX for the first time.
