Does nobody here know about restoring old aircraft ?
I too heard about the fuel contamination problems on HPV L.E Eithne.
However, there are plans to replace Eithne with a new purpose-built ship (with transport capabilities to support the Irish Army when overseas) and I believe it would make sense to retain and upgrade two Dauphins for overseas support roles from this new vessel.
……and train Irish Navy personel to fly them !
The Air Corps seems to favour the Blackhawk, but as was mentioned above it has a bit of an image problem for many people.
I reckon a combination of EC-145’s and Pumas (or Cougars) would be a good choice.
Perhaps also, the two navalised Dauphins could be retained (with an upgrade) for the Irish Navy.
Hi turbo_NZ,
I am currently touring NZ and I visited the Fighter Pilots Museum in Wanaka hoping to (also) see the Fouga.
I was saddened to hear about the crash.
Has there been any report into what actually caused the accident ?
Sorry Mike J, they were fine when I posted them – won’t work now for some reason ?!
Check out http://www.irishairpics.com for lots of Fouga (and other IAC) pics.
mike currill,
Where did you see the IAC Fouga display ?
(Incidentially, their team ‘The Silver Swallows’ used 4 x Fouga’s)
The Irish Air Corps operated 6 x two-seat Seafire/Spitfires until the mid-1960’s.
All of these aircraft are currently airworthy. I believe at least four of them are in the U.S.
One is also flown by a UK display pilot (Grace?), and another is currently almost overhauled at a UK facility – it was recently featured in Fly Past magazine (May issue?) – it has even been repainted in it’s original Irish Air Corps colours !
I always liked the Fouga Magister also.
The Irish Air Corps operated six of them until 1999.
Number 220 – Lead aircraft of The Silver Swallows display team

…..and number 215 has recently been resprayed and is on display at Baldonnel Air Base !

Indeed, JA, it would be better if a helo capability was retained for the Navy. However, the 2 x CASA 235MPA’s are doing all such ops at the present (as pointed out by futurepilot).
However, helo’s would be a great asset for overseas ops as well, e.g. resupply of Army posts, casevac, etc.
I believe the thinking at present is that a ship with a Troop Transport (and cargo) capability would be best for the Irish Defence Forces in general.
Incidentially, the deck on L.E Eithne has not been utilised in years.
Irish Air Corps and Indian Air Force !
Anybody here got some pics of PC-9’s with armaments attached ?
Looks very similar to the CASA 212.
Cheers Phil.
The Hawk 200 would look cool in IAC colours !
Panther.
From my understanding, the Kiwis are selling (have sold?) their Macchis to a U.S. flight training company, with c.four of them to be based in Oz.
Thanks Phil, look forward to your reply.
Regards,
Panther.
